Meteor cylinder not sealing at crankcase

Yep. Dirko red is what you seek. I have used a belt sander like automotive machine shops use to re-face exhaust manifolds to shave down or true up cylinder jugs. You have to be careful and use gentle pressure. Measure the cylinder height before grinding and after. Use a gasket to make up...

    Rayco 1625 Super JR repower

Yeah I wasn't a fan of the Rayco design. The Carltons were a step better. They used pillow blocks, but they were Link-Belt tapered roller bearings. When they developed a little slop in them, there was an adjustment ring you could tighten up with a spanner wrench after loosening some tiny set...

    Rayco 1625 Super JR repower

For the bearings, DO NOT skimp on bearing quality. Get the original style bearings (Dodge if I remember right). Drop the coin and get the best bearings money can buy. Been there, done that. The China, Taiwan, etc bearings do not hold up. Like not even half the life of the Dodge bearings...

    Rayco 1625 Super JR repower

I used to work at a saw shop/rental house that had a small fleet of stump grinders. Three of which were Rayco 1625s like yours. Had 5 or 6 others which were Carlton 2400/2500-4 models. I rebuilt many of those Kohlers. FIRST order of business with those CH25 engines is ditch that tiny air...

    Stihl 011 AV

Why, may I ask, would you want larger spikes on an 011? Shoot, I take the spikes OFF all my saws except my MS441 which gets used for felling.

    Burning REALLY WET wood.

I live just to the west of the Great Dismal Swamp and it is ALWAYS wet where I live. We get a lot of rain too. I stack my firewood when fresh split about 5 feet high onto three standard pallets. The pile ends up being about 4' x 7' x 5' and I cover it with a couple sheets of corrugated metal...

What happen to the Husky dealers?

rancher2, The Stihl M-Tronic units themselves haven't had issues that I've seen. Where they can be troublesome is that they respond to external issues very differently that a traditional carb setup. I.E. the symptoms for a given problem (air leaks, fuel restrictions, etc) may not be the same...

    "over-engineered"

I can see where putting the w/p at the rear would be smart. Complete circulation would ensure you don't have the rearmost cylinders running hotter than the front like the older V8's with the front pump.

    Eastonmade Wood Splitter

I started suspecting it on about page 5 of this thread. Especially seeing the damage pics, but as soon as I saw this guy's "MD Group, Inc." Facebook page, I knew he was renting this thing out. I don't care what he says. I used to work at a rental house that catered to tree workers/firewood...

    Want to Sell NIB Husky 288xp, 353, Stihl 660, 070, 381, Echo CS-1201

Yes they are very reliable. The difference between a 288 and an anvil though is if you run them over with a skidder the anvil will still be usable. I used to do repairs for a logging company that used 288's exclusively. Only time I saw them is after encounters with a skidder or falling tree...

    "over-engineered"

Another example of GM/Cadillac's engineering prowess is the "V4 mode" engines. Let's make a V8 more efficient by shutting down 4 cylinders under light load. How do we do that? Lets kill the injectors and STARVE THE VALVE LIFTERS OF OIL so they collapse! BRILLIANT! You save 2 MPG but you get...

Oil pump that won't self prime?

I have run into this many times on all brands of saws. The displacement of your average oil pump isn't enough to generate suction when dry. A slight amount of pressure in the tank (as you did) almost always gets things going.

What happen to the Husky dealers?

Two words have killed or are killing the American Dream. "Shareholder Profits"

    Stihl 011 AV

Run any modern, high quality synthetic air cooled 2-cycle oil at 50:1 and it will be fine. DO NOT use TC-W3 oil. Back when the 011 was new, 25:1 was necessary due to sketchy quality of unknown oils. 2-cycle push mowers were also commonplace (Lawn-Boy, etc) and they used an oil that burned off...

What happen to the Husky dealers?

Back before Electrolux got their mitts in a good company. I worked at a Stihl/Husqvarna in 1999 when Electrolux/Husqvarna decided to screw it's dealer network in the name of "shareholder profits" and suckle at the tit of big box stores. It pissed off a lot of folks. A few dealers cut their...

MS180C basket case – opportunity or liability?

So true. That's so they can use it to charge some little old lady $5000 to take down a couple tree limbs, then hock it at a pawn shop for decent money. Now they can afford to stay high for the next two weeks and not work.

    Homelite 330 10592; 3 Needle Carb Adjustments.

If you had a cracked intake boot, likely the idle speed screw was backed way off to compensate for it. The butterfly may be completely closed. Turn the screw in to turn the idle up. When I have an older saw that I don't know the preliminary settings, I start with 1-1/2 turns on each and see...

Help pick a saw to complement an MS210

You must be close to my neck of the woods. Near the Dismal Swamp are you? If you can swing it financially, the "Pro" grade saws are worth the extra money. They are smoother running and are more comfortable to operate for long periods. Last a lot longer to boot. $400 bucks for a MS361 ain't...

MS180C basket case – opportunity or liability?

I would leave that one alone. It's a "consumer grade" model that sold for $199 new, and wasn't anything stellar even when new. If it came into my shop I would not repair it. As someone else suggested, part it out on eBay and you'll come out WAY ahead of repairing it. Only way I would even...
