    Measure standing lumber

Hmm, no offense Northman, but blanket statements may reflect your personal experience; I certainly can't speak to that about Dodge/Ram trucks on your behalf, but I've owned them since 1976, 3/4 and 1 tons, gas and diesel. Still do in fact, been good to me--hate to think how many miles in all...

Can the species of this tree be determined?

That is a Black Gum, as Rob said.

    390xp versus 395xp in depth

Brent, I've never had any problem with either one, nor noticed any real difference--both saws oil very well in dry hardwoods, I only use a 28" bar/chain combo at longest, dry hardwood can be a problem sometimes, but I've not had any issues there.

    390xp versus 395xp in depth

Brent, as Brad said above, it's just heavier built--has bigger, more aggressive bump spikes from the factory, in my opinion filters better than the 390 to some degree in bad conditions ie. dust and snow; for a big saw and an older design it is a very smooth handling saw --doesn't seem to be as...

    390xp versus 395xp in depth

What type of timber--hard or soft wood, and where? What length of bar and chain--how much cutting time on the saw on a regular basis? 395 is heavier duty although 390 is certainly not a light saw! I own and use both a lot, in hardwoods, cutting timber, and the 395 will cut bigger trees with a...

    Walnut logs .

Look up Arrow Veneer, in Lima, I believe. There are others but most of them are smaller companies unless you haul them a long way --such as M. Bohlke in Fairfield. Frank Miller Lumber Co. in Union City, In. might be able to help, or recommend some companies. By the way. walnut veneer is sliced.

S-irons --used most of all in good walnut S-irons--used most of all in good walnut or white oak. Veneer buyers use them and like when a seller uses them, sawmills hate them-they cn be hard to get out if you're not used to doing it.

LOL That USED to be done, not much anymore that I'm aware of! My brother and I dug one out for a guy over 30 yrs. ago-- seems like I was running an 056 Super with a 24" bar --basically used up a good chain! Seriously, we cut LOW on good Walnut but don't dig them out!!

Why do we have to start making a big deal out of this GOL debate AGAIN? There are many ways to cut timber safely, efficiently, and productively--it often depends on what part of the country you live in, the terrain, the particular tree, and its problems, and even the weather conditions or your...

Looking to get in touch with brad Snelling

Brad That stretch of I-71 South is ALWAYS bad but Fri. p.m. is the worst!! So sorry about your nice Caddies, but you are priceless! I'm praying for you again for this very important operation--you are living proof that the prayers of a righteous man will avail much in this life however hard it...

What are some saw related things to do around Denver CO or along the way

Bill G: this may be to late to help you, but there is a lot of wheat custom harvesting crews cutting in northern and northeastern Colorado right now--they may be about done by Aug 1: check out Ft. Morgan, Roggen and Brush which are all just east of Greeley. I harvested on custom crew all thru...

What a great bunch of guys on here!! Owl, I guess I've made it,but, I look back over the years and don't know where the time went. However, I'm not done yet--if you quit working you'll die or at least go very slowly and ugly{like Huskstihl's post lol!!} I see Treeslayer2003 and KYLogger and...

This kind of went where it didn't need to go! Although we all have many general similarities in our work in the woods , specifics vary. I don't have s skidder payment, a log truck to fuel, maintain, or drive anymore--let alone a million dollar insurance umbrella policy AND Workers Comp. payments...

That's sort of a funny thing! I guess I can kind of make up my own prices as I go along, depending on how far I drive to get to the site, the type of trees, how many they have, how much business I do with guy, etc. My brother I charge less, but for good trees like that and any distance away I'll...

Here in the Midwest, most loggers are 2 or 3 man shows. You have to be able to do everything fairly well--I always thought little of any man who started logging who couldn't cut at least some for himself. Now, around here, as I guess it is getting to be a lot of other places, the age of loggers...

    Life Update

Congrats!! It's really encouraging to us "older" woods people to see younger men getting into this lifestyle who really want to be here and have some experience in it. So many younger people get into this business because they're pencil-pushers, or bean counters or they just want a "job".You're...

    Steep slope harvester

Many of the logging jobs here in the midwest, the hills of Kentucky,W.va,Tn., etc. can often be small enclosed areas of 5,10 or 15 acres, but with some very valuable white oak and walnut veneer, and other good grade logs--many of these '"woods" as they are often called are on farms, near...

    It's here!!!!............Inside the MS661

Brad, your 661 looks like a great one! Impressive how fast it's cutting that dry white ash when it's that tight yet. Ash is really only average density but very dry when already cut. In hardwoods your modded 661 would be a demon with a 24" or 28" b&c in bigger wood. You're going to make a lot...
