Want to Trade VF grab-bag chains TRADE thread

I got a big box of these chains from Matt a couple months ago. They were not "junk" chains by any stretch - most still had 80-90% life on them. Did you ever get a breaker, Matt? That's the best (perhaps the only?) way to deal with a random lot of chains like this. You'd hope a "chainsaw...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

Haha no - vandal patrons... :dumb:  Actually the intended purpose is for the knockdown joinery - all the slabs can come off and the tables can come apart by knocking out a few pins and wedges. Now what they do with it...

I made these yesterday. Ash and Walnut. I'm keeping one for myself and giving the other one to the customers for the restaurant booths.

    Quartersawing with an Alaskan ?

Here's what I do - it's fast but yields a bit more firewood / flatsawn stock than a "pure" quartersawn method. And it does require a vertical bandsaw. I call this my "inside out" milling strategy. First I mark H/V lines thru heart center on all the logs and cut them in half with the Alaskan...

Regarding the pipe clamps, I agree they're not the best and I usually only use them as a last resort. But it took every single clamp I own assembling those bench frames. I should have used cauls with them too cause the one frame got a little dented. But they work great for my sliding table...

Thanks! All of the slabs get screwed to these cleats; which have slotted holes to allow for seasonal movement. And then the dowels connect them to the frame. They can be removed, so the benches can be knocked down to 2 slabs and the frame. The table can also be knocked down to the top...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

Thanks! The table tops are made from 2 book matched slabs each. It's 4 sequential slices from the same log. 2 more slices from the outside of that log became bench seats. The table legs and feet are quartersawn 4x4 stock, all sawn from another single log. Here's another pic that shows off...

Here's my latest project - a pair of restaurant booths for a local bar. The customers stopped by yesterday to see it and they were thrilled. Lumber is red maple, sawn from my own trees of course. :)

Want to Buy Stihl .325 presets

I'm looking to buy/trade for a few of these. My closest Stihl dealer that actually makes chains is about 30 miles away. I don't have a color preference - green, yellow, none - just needs to be .325. If you have any you'd part with let me know. Thanks, Shawn.

Want to Trade VF grab-bag chains TRADE thread

Team Stihl here... I've got a 3003 mount, 28" 3/8 063 Oregon reduced weight and 3-4 chains for that, all round filed 10 degrees for milling. I don't run that setup as much anymore as I'm starting to prefer 404. I'm looking to make them into some playtime chains. I could trade cash, then you...

Want to Trade VF grab-bag chains TRADE thread

I'd be interested in the 063 gauge chains, both the 3/8 and .325 full chisel full comp. Numbers 5, 7, and 11 on your list. I've already gotten rid of most of my non 063 gauge stuff, so unfortunately I might not have anything you'd want in trade. I do have a partial 25' reel of oregon 404...

Nope sorry, sold them this weekend at a get-together in Michigan. Didn't have a chance to edit the thread title until now.

    Sealing endgrain

Yes, quarter sawn is much less likely to check. (Unless it contains the heart, but then you can't really call it 'quartered') As the board dries out, it shrinks (in width, not length). When that shrinkage does not happen in a consistent way throughout the board is when you have checking.

    Sealing endgrain

Sawing immediately to remove tension is the key for me. I use a knockoff product from my local specialty woodworking store that has very similar properties to anchorseal (Rockler green lumber end sealer). I thought it would help prevent checking in some logs I wasn't able to saw right away...

    Sold 36" Tsumura Lite + 3 milling chains = $200 shipped

I bought these new last October to use as a large milling setup for my 661. The last time I ran it was a couple weeks ago playing "dueling chainsaw mills" in the Black Walnut at my sister's house. After doing a side by side comparison with 36" bars on both saws, I decided I'm going to use the...
