1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

nice hijack guys. everyone knows that there are better woodhaulers than 1/2 ton trucks. I'm just a one house heating guy trying to share my own experiences. I bought my 265-70-lt17 firestone destination ATs based on many good online reviews and advice from a friend who has installed many...

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

I appreciate the input. I plan on using parts from a newer truck, such as a vortec max truck as I said earlier. I have a few friends who are good mechanics to steer me straight. I can't leave anything alone. I had a new cam in this thing before the second oil change. I will be using it as I...

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

Hey streeter, It seems that you missed the rest of this thread. I and others have been discussing some of the details already. I'll get it done and correctly in due time.

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

The Tru-Trac is a nice quiet Torsen type unit. great for the street and off road, except when 1 tire is off the ground. But the E-Brake can help get you out of that too.

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

Well, I already installed a nice Hellwig bag setup and 1.5hp/4cfm compressor. I am running a Detroit Tru-Trac with 4.10s in mine. It goes when you ask it to. I wonder if the stock posi in the 14 bolt is any good? The 10 bolt G80 posi was a pile of crap.

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

Good points everyone. -I have upgraded the front rotors and pads + the 06s have larger brakes to begin with. It stops pretty well for what it is. -Stock size LT tires. I have loaded it down with measureable cargo (Bricks, etc.) enough times to know when I'm at the 3K mark. That is where...

1/2 ton pickup woodhauler reality check

I just replaced the outer rear wheel bearings in my 06 gmc 1/2 ton. 62K mi. on it. I had roughly .010" to .020" radial movement on both sides. This caused some audible clunking when driving in certain situations. I've been loading it down with about 3000#+ for almost 3 years now. lots of...

Wood stove hack-secondary burn tubes added

Looks very well done. It's hard to tell from the pics, but if you have room to extend the shelf to make the flame travel a bit longer, that will help some also. here's another thread with a few pics of my furnace modded. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=37370&page=2 and one...

Anybody tried a Hilkoil wood stove water heating loop?

any reason not to DIY with black iron pipe? And a relief valve of course.

    ms361 or ms390

I ran my 361 against a 390 in 18" oak several times. 20" bars on both. 361 won by quite a bit every time. we even swapped saws and raced again. same results. his chain was in better shape than mine too.

Hot Blast - Larger Blower Unit

My furnace also has a large blower unit like the one pictured. It's a 1/3 hp maybe 12" diameter. Low and high are nice to have also. It works much better than the stock double toy fans that came with it.

Hate to ask, but would you guys take a look at this splitter?

I guess I only should have said that the elbows that are on the splitter that I borrow are 30 years old and haven't had any problems. I have no idea what you've got there. I am no hydraulic parts expert.

Hate to ask, but would you guys take a look at this splitter?

The pipe elbows will not be any problem. The splitter that I borrow, has them also. It is about 30 years old and the elbows are too.

Craigslist "deal of the century" slips thru my fingers...

yep, I almost picked up the same stove for $200 last year. Guy was remodeling (flipping) this house, and didn't want it. I told him I could be there in an hour (lunch break at work) Some lady called him and told him he was a fool for selling it for less than $1500. He called me back and...

    home built secondary burn chamber

The shelf is 4 fire bricks. I "mitered" them to fit together and on top of the 2 on the sides. I have to say that I got lucky with the dimensions there. The secondary air can be reduced by screwing a reducing fitting on the outside 1 1/2" pipe (that is the size of the original fitting for...

    home built secondary burn chamber

Thanks for the kind words guys. I just had to do something after seeing all of these fancy "new" stoves out there! The pipe is 1" coming in and Tees to 3/4" if I remember right. The holes are 3/16" I believe. I drilled approximately enough holes to equal the area of the inlet pipe. The...

    home built secondary burn chamber

Basically, yes. The secondary air is coming from the optional forced draft port in the back. this port is in the center of the back of the furnace. It enters a preheat chamber, before entering the firebox below the grate in the back. This is where I attached my new pipe. I am not using a...

    home built secondary burn chamber

I modified mine last year, it works very well. here is a sketch. The blue are fire bricks added to increase the flame travel distance. The red is iron pipe added to allow air to preheat before entering the chamber through holes drilled into it. I'll post some pics later tonight.

    Cleaning Chains

The wire brush thing works, but it's a pain. I have soaked them in a can of mixed gas for a few days, then put them on the saw while still wet, and make a few cuts. They turn out like new.
