    Splitting advice

Well, this question can open a can of worms....... First, what is your physical size? Can you handle swinging a 8 of 10 lb splitting maul for 3-4 hours on end? If not then you need to look at something smaller and lighter such as a splitting ax or a Fiskers type of ax. The single choice of...

Have I been robbed? Getting nervous.

You get what you pay for in life...... Sometimes the great deal isnt worth the problems that come with it........ I would be on my way there soon. Craig

    Worst Smelling Wood

I think the thick bark of Black Locust stinks the worst when burnt. It burns damn hot but you want to reload quick and shut the door before the bark gets going. I don't think Red Oak smells that bad. I cut it a lot and work with it in the wood shop and has a nice smell when worked. Craig

    Tree of Heaven

Tree of hell..... This wood is nothing but garbage plain and simple. It stinks when cut, dug, and burnt. Typical China SH!T.....garbage! Next on the list is Stink Bugs....They were brought in from China too. Why is everything from China a pain in the ass? Craig

    Managing coals

Coal stockpile.......... Smokie, I have a Lopi Liberty and when I burn it hard I have the same problem. First off, I never throw the coals out as those are the cleanest burning part of the log. What I do is stick the poker in the fire box and stir them up. This allows the ash to fall to...

    Shindy 488, questions/comments

Junk....... I have one of these and personally think the damn thing is junk. I have a Stihl 026 that will run circles around this 488. Just my opinion having run this 488 for a number of years Craig

    Sharp Maul vs Dull Maul?

Sharp Maul I keep my maul as sharp as I can. After each use I take a file to it just to touch up the edge. I have found the sharper the better as the head will bury itself into the round rather than bouncing off. The biggest thing you really need to keep an eye on is the taper of the cutting...

High winds - up in smoke

We are having some high winds here in Western Pennsylvania tonight. My stove is going thru wood just like a fat woman in spandex going thru cigarettes. I even have it throttled down and she's still smokin and burning hot! You can really tell a front with colder weather is moving thru. Craig

    Stihl tooth profile......

Major.....I run all full chisel chain. 3/8 pitch, 050 gauge Craig

    Stihl tooth profile......

Joe, That's exactly what I am thinking too. The profile that Stihl grinds at the factory doesn't seem it can be duplicated. I get them to cut and cut well, but never as good as the very first run. Craig

    Stihl tooth profile......

I buy all Stihl bars and chains as replacements, and sharpen all my own chains with an Oregon 511 grinder. I can't for the life of me figure out exactly what profile Stihl puts on their chains from the factory. Does anyone have the angles and profile figured out that can share the...

    Chimney Fire

Chimney fire..... My house is a two story with a chimney the length of yours. I had one chimney fire in it, back in 2003, and it scared the hell out of me. When it started it sounded like a freight train going thru the house due to the draft and rush of air going up. Then came the poping...

Chimney Crown & Crown Seal Application......

I just received a two gallon bucket of Crown Seal to seal up the crown on my chimney. Couple questions: Has anyone else ever used this stuff on their chimney crown? What is the method of applying? What temperatures are good for applying? Would like to do it this weekend here in...

    Chopping Blocks

Making a block last...... The best way to make a chopping block last is to leave the bark on it and flop it over on its side when not using it so the cut ends are not on the ground. When you keep the ends on the ground it acts like a sponge and just wicks and pulls water up thru the cut ends...

    Carbide chainsaw chain?

Carbide Chain..... First, the carbide saw chain will last quite a long time compared to a regular steel chain. To sharpen a special diamond coated wheel is needed, which I would bet not every sharpening place will have one due to the cost. I had thought about getting one of these chains...
