    Welding Bandit anvil

Thanks. I welded it up and just used an angle grinder. I milling machine would have given me a nicer finish, though.

    Welding Bandit anvil

I have a Bandit 90XP. I read in the manual that the anvil can be repaired by welding. I'm keen to do it this weekend as I have a big job on Monday. Has anyone done this? Will a stick welder do the job? Can anyone tell me what sort of steel it is? Specifically I want to put some more body on...

    Job Form

Hi I'm looking for a daily work form or a job form. I already have an equipment and safety checklist, but I'm looking for a form that details how we are going to take down a tree or otherwise do our job. Would anyone have one like that they would be willing to share for me to customise it for...

    Plant and Equipment Security

Having invested in a wood chipper recently, I'm starting to notice I've got a fair bit of money's worth of tree equipment lying around. Apart from a couple of padlocks, it's there for the taking and I have no insurance. I'm wondering if there are commonly used security measures others here...

    Petzl Zigzag

Update: the 24 inch sling is just a little too long. It's true about being able to pull the rope from under it, so it works a lot like a hand ascender, though I try to do most of my climbing with my legs. I'm going to try to get an ~18 inch sling now if I can. It's a little scary relying on a...

    Bandit 90XP decals

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. I was suspicious, first of all because I'm in Australia where multinationals love charging us more, and secondly because I saw a set on ebay a month ago for considerably less. I wish I'd bought them when I could have.

    Bandit 90XP decals

Hi I'm in Australia where we sometimes get price gouged by local distributors. They want over US$300 for a safety decal set for a Bandit 90XP chipper. Does that sound right? Can anyone suggest somewhere I can buy them online, please?

Trimming badly pruned large limbs - two conflicting opinions

I'd suggest going easy on the abuse. It's a way too strong word at this stage. Photos have not been posted and the OP has given conflicting information: that decay is forming and that the branches are generally starting to heal over. It's quite possible some branches will not heal over, rot back...

    Becoming an Arborist, Albany, NY

Buy one, sir. I understand 'old school', but modern equipment makes climbing trees much easier. Also, it's well worth buying a mechanical prussik of some sort. Really, why do it hard at your age? Moose, you've already been given heaps to do. I'd just say that if you've make good progress into...

    Cost of dropping trees

I only use a bucket when I have to (over a house or other structure and ziplining isn't practical) because of the expense I have to pay out. As you can imagine for someone is business, there has to be a markup to our expenses along the way. That usually makes it cheaper for my customers for me...

Trimming badly pruned large limbs - two conflicting opinions

I'm sure you use the principles of tree biology first and foremost, though. I clicked through to your site and you do mention them there.

    Wow! I love this 365 x-torq (and I'm a huge Stihl head!)

Yeah, most old school arborists are Stihl, then they find Husky rocks. Great to see you've joined the club. If I'm not mistaken 365s can be converted into 372s easily by removing some little port cover on the motor somewhere?

Trimming badly pruned large limbs - two conflicting opinions

How long ago was the tree subjected to poor pruning? I remove the stubs when I come across this (which I do far too often). There are plant hormones that assist the tree to compartmentalize the wound located near the branch collar. Left, the branches will continue to rot and you will have...

    Rigging...rope or just drop?

It's first a question of safety and secondly a question of economics. I lower branches the fastest way that is safe for people and property. I'd be surprised at anyone who decided on a method using any other criteria. Bombing branches down is fastest, lowering on a rope comes in second and...

    What are these?

Don't use chemical control. i would apply a trunk barrier coated with horticultural glue then spray the leaves with Bacillus thurigiensis. You can see an article I wrote about treating caterpillars on poincianas at https://brisbanetrees.com.au/poincianas-and-caterpillars. Excuse the formatting...

    climbing techniques with a zigzag

Sorry if I replied too harshly to you. Frankly, the reason I use the handle tree lopper is because I compete with tree loppers in SEO, so it's to my advantage to identify as one online. My strategy is to then teach people the difference between arborists and tree loppers on my website and...

    climbing techniques with a zigzag

Yeah, I'm using a knot at the moment. I anchor hitch my climbing line to the top carabiner. It's not what Petzl instructs, though, and I can see why. The knot gets close to the release mechanism. It's not a problem when the ropes are straight but from my test climbing I find that if I get...

    climbing techniques with a zigzag

Carburetorless rhymes with clueless, but I make connections from real life rather than from rhymes, so I don't think there's any connection there. When it comes to climbing equipment I assess based on what expert climbers are doing, not from looks. It's all part of sanity. I must get myself an...

    Petzl Zigzag

Yeah, I'm mid 40's and I've done some hard yards in this job, so I can imagine how you feel. I'm getting into climbing technology for the same reason you're there. I'm on treestuff too, and I noticed the different attitudes to tech there. I guess that's where I'll go to learn, then. There, and...

    Petzl Zigzag

Thanks a lot. I measured it up and reckon a 24 inch sling should do the trick. I'm a bit light on equipment so I ordered a Petzl sling to try out my new climbing rig. It's interesting the bagging the zigzag cops here considering the reputation of some of the climbers who use them.
