The Art Martin Videos (rebuilt thread)

And I thought I was bad with six saws and two mills.😆 Your the man👍🏻 I remember when I found an old Montgomery Wars frame for an 820 PowerBee motor. It had been dropped and cracked. I welded it up for Art and he turned it up into a race saw with twin carbs I think. I still have my Wards saw. j-

The Art Martin Videos (rebuilt thread)

Mill is fine. I have a 54” bar I’ve done the majority of my milling with. I’m currently building a not so mini-mill from an 820 PowerBee motor. I’m getting older and need the help from family/friends when I mill. The Mrs. says I need to do something with the slabs I’ve milled before I bring...

The Art Martin Videos (rebuilt thread)

Thank you for rebuilding Arts thread. I knew Art and spent some time with at his home teaching me how he sharpened he chains. I built home one of my chain sharpening mandrels. I bought a West Ben engine from Art that I built my Alaskan style mill with, it’s still working. jerry-

    Thoughts on running saws empty?

I do the same with my saws. I find I have less problems starting them later. j-

    Auxiliary Oiler on Alaska mills

That motor works good using the big air filter. When I built the exhaust, I made it exhaust away from me so I’m not having exhaust blowing back in my face. The stock muffler that American Power uses blows it back at me. I do use real good hearing protection when operating the engine. Now that...

    Auxiliary Oiler on Alaska mills

Here are a couple pictures of my mill with the nose oiler. When I start milling I crack the ball valve at the nose and the back of the mill. My motor does not have an internal oil pump. The nose tube on my mill has a fitting attached to the frame that seals with an O-Ring seals to a hole I’ve...

    Auxiliary Oiler on Alaska mills

You can build a simple nose oiler with a simple ball valve. Mount it to the vertical tube that you adjust your slab thickness to. I’ll get a picture of mine this weekend and post it. j-

    Chain Sharpening Fixture

I’ve made a few for friends. I made one for Art Martin for teaching me how he sharped his competition chains. I use planer blades that are no longer useful. I only made this one because mine was stolen. j-

    Chain Sharpening Fixture

I have three chains for each of my saws/mill. I don’t like having to sharpen a chain in the field. I prefer sharpening my chains in my shop using my fixture with plenty of light. 😊 I have a vice in my shed at our cabin I can clamp to.

    Chain Sharpening Fixture

Had to make a new fixture for holding and sharpening my chains for my saws and mill. I had my toolbox with all my saw maintenance tools and fixture stolen. Hope you all like what I made. jerry-

    Welding worn sprockets

I made sprockets for my 820 PowerBee (134cc) motors on my old Wards Chainsaw and my Alaskan style mill. I plasma cut as you did, the newer style drum to fit my older drum. I made a simple mandrel to center both pieces and then hard silver brazed them together. I Guarantee it will not come apart...

    Log splitter engine size ?

I just replaced the 6hp Tecumseh I put on my log splitter I built in 1984 with a 6.5hp Briggs/Stratton. Bigger motor doesn’t work as hard. j-

How to stop drying slabs from warping?!

I go down to Harbor Freight and buy six packs of ratchet straps. Depending how long your slabs are you may need more. Once the slabs are stickered and located for drying I’ll go check how tight the straps are every few days. Eventually you’ll see less and less shrinkage. The straps really...

    Mini mill question

My brother/I have been restoring various cars. We did a 1965 B-production SCCA Fastback Mustang before the pandemic hit. We have raced at the Carson City Hill Climb and a couple of vintage races including the Rolex Al Laguna Seca. Also did a 67 Dodge Coronet 440 that now has a 440. 68 Nova drag...

    Mini mill question

Yeah, just doing other things. I’ve been using all the slabs I milled for various projects. With three grandsons we always have projects. My brother/I have been restoring/racing vintage TransAm and SCCA racecars. Still doing milling when possible.

    Mini mill question

You could take your 1-1/2” to 2” slabs and cut them to 3-12” to 4” with a track saw.
