    Credentials, skill, insurance...optional?

I've downsized equipment in order to try and squeek by. Sold one bobcat and the dump truck for what i owed on them and just got a used dump trailer to pull behind the truck. I no longer have any notes whatsoever. I can bid lower but always wonder if I should. Biz is at a low and even lowering...

Any of you carvers within 3 hours of Atlanta Georgia?

I may commission a carving of a panther head if you think you can do it. Let me know if you are within a few hours of Atlanta. I need a ball park price for a head that will be approximately 3-4 feet in diameter. I will find and supply wood if I need to.

Why you should wear chaps! (GORE WARNING)

I'm very happy it was not any deeper. Thank goodness you could still walk back to the truck. Did anyone know where to look for you if you had been stranded?

    Negotiating with Woodcutters

First, if you hire a firewood peddler to come cut down your tree be sure that if he drops it on your house that he has insurance to cover your loss. It seems like a great deal to trade out for work until you have a huge tree laying in your den on your couch watching your LCD TV.

    tripping a widow maker

I open face notch the top and back cut from the bottom up at no higher than slightly above the waist. I sure as heck don't cut up at or above face level though. Good luck with this technique, seems neat but a bit unsafe, I have been doing it as I described for years with no problems. Made a...

    knive to bedknive clearance

The bedknife gap gauge for my BC1500 drum chipper is about 1/8 inch or around 4mm. I'd wager it is the same for the 1800.

How to kill the overhead monster

Yep, I stage materials then start up and chip in surges. Don't run up the hours, nor eat up fuel.

How to kill the overhead monster

The only way to eliminate OH is to work for someone else and let them deal with all the OH. Self employed = all the headaches and all the rewards, not always tipped to the good side of things.

Fell 30 Feet Out of The Tree Today...

I have never used the VT and I never will. When studying up on hitches the word "finicky" is all I need to make my decision not to use it. The hitch I will rely on for my life support will not be "finicky". I keep my eyes on my hitch all the time as will all my connection points. I Use the...

    need some advice

I absolutely agree!!! In my book if I cannot set a rope in the upper portion of a dead tree that I am felling then the risks are too high. There have been a few exceptions on small easy drops but if there are things to avoid then stack all the odds in your favor. I will wedge, rope and...

Can't trim trees when the leaves are on them...

I have never heard of not pruning while the leaves are falling. But yes, pruning while trees are under the stresses of putting out new growth in spring is a no no. What is the problem with during leaf fall?

    Help finding good trre trimmer

To be honest a good way to find a good climber/trimmer is by their reputation with other tree services and then steal them away with a better offer. Not very nice, but it works for a colleague of mine. I fill in for his climber or to help out when he needs me as a contractor and he found his guy...

    Oak wilt problem

Thanks, this is a case where I hope to be wrong but looks like I am right. A bad deal for everyone down here.

    Oak wilt problem

Yes, the death timeline for this tree was what leaned me towards oak wilt. Also the pattern of discoloration of the leaves. There are a few places where bleeding is present that I will peel bark back and get a sample from. I expect to find a spore mat.

    Oak wilt problem

I am currently removing a large 40 DBH red oak from a customers front yard that I am certain is a victim of Oak wilt. While I have been there I have identified two other smaller red oaks with symptoms. they have asked me to go ahead and remove those as well. I plan to see if I can pinpoint some...

    It's hot!

My ground man and I came off of four hot tough days in a row yesterday and we are both exhausted today. I was having stomach aches today too, I just felt sick in general. I will take tomorrow off also, it seems to take a couple of days to recover completely from dehydration of any...
