    Repair pricing

I'm still working on setting up a saw repair business. I have worked in a shop before, and they were very arbitrary with their pricing. We kind of just liberally decided whatever the labor charge would be based on how long the work took, but there was really no set time for certain repairs...

What does aluminum transfer look like?

How do I know if I have it? What's the difference between that and worn chrome?

    Chrome thickness

OK, I have no idea. I thought it was all electroplating. So...how thick is it? Someone must know.

    Chrome thickness

Does anyone know how thick the plating is on cylinders?

    EETC tests

Does anyone know where to get full practice tests? I have the study guides but they don't cover everything. I can't seem to find much on Google either.

    work/shop space

I've been looking into getting a small workshop just to work on saws. I really don't need much more than the size of one room, a few hundred sq. ft. tops. I'm not seeing much available anywhere, even CL. Can't you get a conex or something with power hookups? Any other ideas?

    How to get repair work

Where is somewhere I can go to talk to a lot of arborists? The only place I know they'll be is a dealer/saw shop. I doubt they'll let me advertise there or bother their clients. I'm not really seeing any local arborist or ISA conferences either.

    Decarb with a hot plug?

Never had much luck with the decarbonizer fluid. I did try oven cleaner though and it works great, at least on the piston, and didnt see any aluminum corrosion. Still having trouble getting it off the top of the chamber though. Also I agree with CR888. I've never seen a well-used saw without...

    Decarb with a hot plug?

I've been experimenting with different methods for decarbonizing. I had the idea of using a slightly hotter plug for a bit to try to burn out that carbon. What are your thoughts? I believe you cant go too cold with the plug because you'll get too much buildup anyway.

    Piston plating

Interesting conversation, but does anyone have an answer to my query?

    Piston plating

Great, I think that answers it. Follow up question!! How do they only plate the cylinder sleeves then?? Do they mask the outside? I can't find any demos on youtube.

    Piston plating

Interesting. But you still haven't answered my question: Regarding the piston only-is the entire thing plated or just the skirt? If so, how do they do that? Chris, you said yours is plated on top?
  17. C

    Piston plating

Quick question: when you have a low-end model, often the piston will be chrome plated. Do they only plate the skirt, or do they just let the entire thing get plated?

    How to get repair work

You guys may have seen my post from yesterday. I'm a mechanic looking for work. I have already been trying cold calls to tree services. I think there is a landscapers convention next month that I'll be going to. Does anyone have any more advice?

Think they gave me the wrong part

So I ordered yet another ring from partstree.com. Lo and behold, it still doesn't fit! It's the exact same thing. Too big around, and doesn't fit inside the groove. I verified the model number and part number. What the hell is happening?? I know the engine didn't shrink.
