Stihl 041AV... Garage Art or Restore???

I like to see these old saws... Its not my money or time, my vote is for you to restore it! If it were mine it would be on a shelf as is, just in case I ran across another 041 that needs parts.

To buy Stihl 261 or 261cm?

I love my Muffler modded 261cm! I cut 4-6 cords per year for myself and help the farmer where I hunt cut 10-12 more. The 261 is my "Big saw" and my backup is a little 170 that I use for limbing, great combo! Most of what I cut in the past few seasons has been 16-24" dead elms.

Anyone try this "Junon" carb for MS170/180 etc?

    How did this turn out?

    MS261 VS MS261 C-M Comparison

WOW, I would have never guessed how much of a difference the muffler mod makes on the 261C. Its not that I was really skeptical of the muffler mod helping out... Its just I was not sure how noticeable it would be. I used to race RX-7s put on the the "Racing Beat" exhaust that claimed like 20%...

    New MS462 C-M...

I appreciate you "taking one for the team!" The rest of us are in your dept, hopefully one of the guys out on the east coast will let you run their 462 when it comes out. Aaron

    New MS462 C-M...

I hope you are right, I will be on the hunt for the MS462 when it comes out if it is both lighter and stronger than the MS461 I have run. Just going to have to convince the misses by then that I NEED a bigger saw... ;) Aaron

    New MS462 C-M...

I emailed Stihl today asking about both the MS441C-M and the MS462C-M this is the response I got. Figured it makes sense to pass it on here... "We are in receipt of and thank you for your e-mail. Two years ago, the MS441C M chainsaw was placed on production hold to the USA by our founding...

    MS261 VS MS261 C-M Comparison

Well I finally got time to finish up the Muffler mod for mine... Hoping to give it a test run tomorrow night. I left the stock port alone, and the side port is currently .171 in^2. I have plenty of room to go bigger if needed. But Should be about 75% of the mufflers intake with both exhaust...

Depth Gauge Tools for Saw Chain

Geometry/angle is good, I drew it up in Solid works and cut it out of red board on the mill at work. As for resting on multiple teeth, you bring up a valid point I had not put much thought into. I do tend to take a little more off the left teeth than the right. But the left and right stay...

Depth Gauge Tools for Saw Chain

I was just trying to show top and bottom... so everyone could get a complete mental picture of the gauge. Aaron

What is the dumbest thing you have done with a chain saw?

I have not been cutting for that long and have to cut alone most of the time since my son was born last year... both have kept me very careful. The farmer always knows where I am cutting and he comes up or sends someone up to checks on me if he has not heard the saw running in a while. But...

Depth Gauge Tools for Saw Chain

It rests on 3 teeth and butts against the front of a tooth, the top of the "fork" (lacking a better term) is cut at 6 degrees from the corner the tooth sits in... as the tooth is filed back and the distance between the front of the tooth and the raker/depth gauge increases... the raker is...

Depth Gauge Tools for Saw Chain

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but seemed like I should post here rather than make a new one. I am not sure about if I am sold on the progressive raker idea but figured I would make a gauge and try it out... PDf is the drawing. Also included 2 pics of the finished product. Had to make a few...

    What are your firewood saws?

I just started cutting for myself 3 years ago when we bought our house. I own a 261cm with a 18" bar and a 170 with a 16", a buddy has a 440 that I have used a few times, it works great for the bigger stuff (24" +) or felling anything that requires re-positioning multiple times with the 18" bar...

How long have you been running a saw?

I started to run saws in 2008, doing ground work for a snow removal company that dabbled in tree service in the summers. I worked for that company until 2011. Then 3 years ago I started burning wood when my wife and I purchased our house. Since then I cut 4-6 cords for myself and help cut...

    MS261 VS MS261 C-M Comparison

Hello, I have been prowling this site, since I first purchased my saws for cutting firewood 3 years ago. (MS261c and a MS170 for limbing) First, I would like to say thanks to all the contributors to this great site. I have learned a lot and hope to learn more and begin to contribute as times...
