    Repairing a striped plug socket

I've an old 038 super with a striped plug socket that was badly repaired with a helicoil which has mashed up the surrounding flat surface so much a plug won't seal. I've had it ages and been undecided on just replacing the jug, or finding a machine shop to fit a timecert or...? I've just found...

just bought a turquoise 4300 as amazon had 24% off. its the same as the dolmar 421. i'll gut the cat and richen it up, but want to know if it needs any more holes in the muffler (and how much?)? And does it benefit from a timing advance? if so, how much off the key? 10 thou? 20? thanks

    Electric chainsaws?

What's the views on electric saws these days? With sachsdolmakita stepping away from petrol saws are electric getting comparible? I struggle to see a battery saw competing with a 70+ cc saw for performance or for cost when a days worth of batteries are factored in. Although for smaller saws I...

stihl non pro saws timing advance?

ok so the non pro saws aren't so popular here but I'm wondering if anybody has done a timing advance on one. specifically the ms180. these saws have the 'key' cast inside the flywheel and from the little i've been able to find, its not a great idea to try and file it down. has anybody done...

burning plastic, no, wait a moment!

This is not a whitespider argument starter, honest! I read something the other day, and have since tried to research a real answer one way or another to no avail. I also started this same thread elsewhere and just got argument and name calling from people claiming to be expert. I'll try...

    PPE, chainsaw trousers and gloves

I'll start by 'phoning a friend' to the thead... @Philbert is wise and knowledgeable here I think So after upgrading the saw last year, from an ickle ms180 to a big boys 365 x-torq, i probably ought to upgrade the PPE. Should have already really but.... since I only buck up logs already on...

    State of the wood pile

As my second burning season comes to an end I was peering out the kitchen window at the wood pile and thinking where I was, comparing my situation to last year and thinking where I want to be and what I need to do to achieve it. I thought I'd note it down in a 'State of the woodpile' address...

    Essential flue maintenance

So I finally got round to sweeping the flue. Bit late but I was fairly confident it wasn't bad. Last year was my first year burning and with what I've used so far this winter I've burnt 8-9m3, about 2.5 cord. First of out came the stoves baffle, the rotary brush set and cordless drill and...

    What wood burns hottest?

After slinging a few splits of Yew on my stove last night, and experiencing for myself the 'hotter than plutonium' burn I'd read about, I'm left wondering this morning, what wood burns hottest? In your experience.

Swinging an axe, left or right handed?

Saw this from fiskars And thought, uh? So do I swing like a righty? I'm a lefty but put my right hand at the bottom. I swing a bat left handed, left hand nearer the business end, right hand at the end of the handle, it seems natural to do the same with an axe, so fiskars, wtf?

New to me Stihl 038AV Super, photos and a few questions

A bit about me first, I cut about 2 cords of firewood a year, all arb waste I've collected from a local tree service. A lot of this is already cut to stove length and what isn't is usually small in diameter so I cope quite well with just a MS180 and patience. Quite well, but not perfectly. I...

    Pay back

I only installed my stove last October. I just got my gas bill summary for the last year, and now feel rather smug :dancing: Burning scrounged wood feels good
