    New MS462 C-M...

I'll probably wait a year for the inevitable bugs to get worked out, but for nearly a 1.5 lb lighter saw, I'll be all over that.

how much more dangerous is a bigger saw

You've gotten good advice. Trees and tired are the biggest dangers. I try to mitigate risk by using my chain brake pretty aggressively. I start the saw brake on, release the brake to warm up, move only with the brake on, and as soon as I have completed the cut, the brake is back on. It's a...

MS 461 or MS 661 CM?

Nope. Not cheap, but not bad if bought with the saw. Doing it my way is always the most expensive. As far as "too much" saw, if you're bucking substantially sized rounds, a 661 is not too much saw. I was very worried about ending up with more saw than I could handle. It was a needless worry...

MS 461 or MS 661 CM?

I have a 461, but if I was bucking big logs all day, I would have a 661. Do not buy the 25" bar. Get a 28" (or 32 if you're very tall) will keep your back straighter while limbing and will be much less fatiguing. I wouldn't listen to my dealer and bought a 25". All that 25 does is add...

Sawzall Battery Won't Keep a Charge

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-XC-High-Capacity-Battery-2-Pack-48-11-1822/203806673 You will want a Milwaukee set that has the M18 XC batteries for use with a Sawzall (which I have and is excellent). I have the 3Ah (54Wh) units shown in the link and they're great...

Sawzall Battery Won't Keep a Charge

Milwaukee has, hands down, the best LiON batteries on the market. You'll need their brand tools, however.

How do you get help when stuck in remote areas?

You're right about the help versus 911 feature. I forgot about that. I had the first gen SPOT for about two years and used it extensively in the woods dirt biking. The new generation of SPOT must have improved greatly, because simply descending 100m to the bottom of a ravine would kill the...

What makes someone a logger ?

If you don't swear, neither trees nor heavy equipment will properly respect you.

    The Whining Thread

That ^^ is what I want to see a video of. I'd be scared of someone farting in the wrong direction around that tree, much less trying to drop it.

How do you get help when stuck in remote areas?

The satellite emergency beacons are just OK. SPOT is the major brand. The signal is easily blocked by tree canopy and the satellite is fairly low on the horizon and easily blocked in canyons or just by being on the north side of dirt. So, you might be climbing to the top of a hill just to get a...

Best cord prices I could find (PNW)

$240 is pretty steep. You actually might be able to still scrounge blowdown ponderosa for free in urban Spokane. There's still a fair bit left around - at least on the south hill. I realize that's not ideal, but it's also not $240 a cord. My next suggestion is worse than the first, but you...

Who gets to take credit for that mell of a hess?

What makes someone a logger ?

Unless you can take credit for torching off an epic conflagration like the Tillamook Burn, you're really not fully qualified as a gyppo. ;)

    Light weight bars

Once you go to lightweight bars, you'll find it hard to go back. I have a Stihl 28" lightweight bar and it is a far far more comfortable setup that the 25" bar it replaced. I initially choked on the price, but I'd never run a long, heavy bar again without a damned good reason.

The "Not So Pro" discussion thread...of course Pros are welcome!

For us non-loggers, how does CTL differ from normal fall and forward/skid/yard in who wants or will take the trees? Is there a standard CTL length?

The "Not So Pro" discussion thread...of course Pros are welcome!

Wow! When you can't take your logs right across the river to Longview, the town that was custom-built to receive logs ... that's just messed up.

    Shop Re-Sharpened Chains vs. Factory

I totally bought into: "I have a several chains, and my local saw shop expertly sharpens them for me." Reality was not as kind, however.

    Shop Re-Sharpened Chains vs. Factory

This ^ right here. I let my Stihl dealer "sharpen" exactly ONE chain - "ruin" would be far more accurate. I discovered that they can charge only $7 to sharpen because they do *nothing* between the chain that's been sharpened five times and one that needs its first sharpening. My chain came...

    Timberline sharpener any good?

It can be really fussy, but the end result is about as good as it gets. I recommend ditching the knobs for 1/4-20 bolts that can be wrenched down. Once you get it aligned, it needs to be TIGHT on the bar.
