Granberg milling with an old 041AV

I'll give that a try and add it to my bag of tricks. I like the sturdiness and low friction of the ladder for shorter stuff, but that looks like a great way to do longer logs. Many ways to skin the cat, er, log!

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

That's a cool idea! How do you keep the board from sliding off? How do you get all the nail heads level, with a string?

    My new sawmill

Very nice job! I love the jack screws for the lift mechanism. Are you still loading it from your tractor's carryall? Might I suggest using ramps and parbuckling them up? Speaking as someone whoose back has seen better days, I can use all the mechanical advantage I can get!

    Drinkin' Stump ideas

Very cool! It's amazing the ideas that pop up sitting around a fire with some brain lubricant! I second Buzz Sawyer's idea, I've had good luck with power planers when I need to hog some wood off, use the router option for the thinnest amount possible, it takes forever. That said, if you ever...

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

Good info as always Bobl, I have a few more "practice" logs to experiment with, I'll give that a try. I was also considering cutting some wooden wedges and drilling a hole in the back of them. I could put an opposing pair under a few rungs and use the holes to screw then to the log.

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

Finished milling out that Red Oak into a 6x6 post for my shop. It will replace a jack lally, much better looking! I also picked up an old Stihl 045 Super to be my dedicated milling saw, the old 041 was working pretty hard!

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

Thanks, so far so good! I'll try using just wedges under the ladder in the middle, my bolt solution seems problematic.

Granberg milling with an old 041AV

Finished setting up a Granberg mill on my old Stihl 041AV. I welded the ladder clamps up and tried it out the other day. Good results so far! The 041 is a little small for this work, but it did the job. Now I need to get a longer bar and a ripping chain for my recently modded Husky 365 (I ground...

    Black locust

If I were you I'd get online and try to find any wooden boat builders near the lake. A good friend of mine is a professional boat builder/restorer, and regularly uses Black Locust as a substitute for White Oak.

Plans and pictures of Gene1605's small bandsaw mill

Pretty slick! I love the tape measure secured with a hose clamp, sometimes the simplest solutions are best (I tend to forget that now and then). Thanks for the PDF!

    Homemade logosol type mill

Sounds interesting, any pictures? I believe it's fairly common to use the bar mount studs that way, I've seen pictures of Bobl's mill that uses a similar setup, but with two studs. Hopefully he'll chime in, he's a wealth of info.

Here's a pic of a small Black Cherry log I milked into a slab for a friend, and one of what he did with it! (show off :)

    Gberg MKIII

Finally bought a Granberg mill. It currently has my old 041AV on it, I'll mount the Hq 365 on it later.

Glad you like it. I also like the bench part, it keeps the work at a comfortable height.

    Metal Shelving to Chainsaw Mill

First test, but using a crosscut chain (rip chain just shipped). The basic design works well. I'm going to weld a handle onto the guide for better control though. When the ripping chain shows up I'm going to mill up some black cherry bench parts, I'll post pics.

    Metal Shelving to Chainsaw Mill

Guide is finished now, I'm just waiting for the rip chain to arrive (supposedly arriving today). I sanded and waxed the cross beam and added a three part tackle that will allow a friend to help pull the saw through the wood. I used that technique with an old Haddon Beam Maker about 11 years ago...

    Metal Shelving to Chainsaw Mill

A few more pics today. I got the guide done, painted it, test clamped it to my saw, any promptly broke loose one of the bolts while tightening it. Apparently my weld on that one didn't penetrate the bolt. I ground it down and will re-weld it. Better to break now than while I'm using it.

    Metal Shelving to Chainsaw Mill

Started working on the saw clamp/guide today, and should finish it up tonight. The welds aren't pretty, but it won't come apart!
