    My Quick And Dirty CSM

Be my guest. It did seem to help.

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

The haywagon is finished. The substructure is all CSM red oak on a steel frame and the deck is all CSM poplar. The fence on the back is reused from the old bed that heated my home for about three weeks in December.

Smallest cc saws anyone has used for milling

I used a Stihl MS 250 (45 cc) on around forty 2X12X10' hardwood (oak, soft maple, and poplar) boards. The saw still seems to be running fine. The mill was a crude homemade alaskan style. Before that, I used a Stihl 017 (30 cc) to freehand mill some 8" birch logs into lumber.

    Not much response

I sure wouldn't try to make a profit with a chainsaw mill. Mine is strictly an infrequent hobby thing. I haven't operated a bandsaw mill, but I have hired several with the condition that they would give me a break on the price for pulling the slabs and boards off myself so they wouldn't have to...

My new build it yourself sawmill and rail bed.

Looks good. Does that tongue assembly come off?

    Stump Burn

When I was a kid, another kid spilled some burning sterno in an old ash stump in a city park. No flame or smoke was visible, but the next day the stump was gone and there was a one foot deep hole in the ground with ash ash in it. Over the next two weeks, three other elm and ash stumps...

    Getting into csm

I'm using Granberg ripping chain. I tried purchasing it directly from Granberg, but I kept getting error messages. I got it from Sheldon Hill. I haven't seen a comparison between it and Bailey's. Your chain has to match your drive sprocket, bar nose sprocket and bar gauge. You want the thinnest...

    Stump Burn

I've never tried this, but I wonder if you can turn a stump into a rocket stove. Plunge cut twice straight down from above to make a + shaped vertical channel deep into the stump. Then plunge cut in from the side into the bottom of the + shaped channel to feed air in. Pour some fuel in, light...

New house, mind looking at the trees?

Honey locust - better get the thornless and seedless hybrid. Those seed pods make a big mess. Sweet gum - Saw a lot of those die in the SELP. Might be too cold there. Katsura - never saw one in the SELP. Zelkova - never saw one in the SELP. Is it susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease? Swamp white...

New house, mind looking at the trees?

Not particularly. Silvers and reds are sometimes even sweeter that sugars when the conditions are right, but usually it takes less than 50% additional sap to make the same amount of syrup. mapletrader.com is a great site for info on syrup making. Tapping silvers and reds is definitely worth...

New house, mind looking at the trees?

No. He said he was going to take it down next year. He can tap it at the appropriate time next winter.

New house, mind looking at the trees?

If you're sure that you are going to have it taken down, consider tapping it to death before you do. You might as well get some syrup out of it before it dies.

    Getting into csm

I don't see how it could be bad. I haven't run my homemade CSM for very long, but it would definitely be considered under-powered for milling and it just seems like running the saw real slow is not hurting it. You might need to add an aux oiler for the b&c.

    Buzz saw repurpose?

I really don't think you need to worry about liability from selling it, since you didn't manufacture it. But I can understand wanting to keep it because it is kind of cool. I wouldn't modify it, except to make it safer, unless you can save and preserve any parts that you take off to change its...

    Stump Burn

A few bags of charcoal and an electric fan set on low should do the trick.

How much you add for planing?

I don't think I'm good enough at preventing gouges to leave less than 1/4" per side for planing.

    My Quick And Dirty CSM

I got the hole through the bar nose with a carbide bit. I'm thinking cobalt might have been a better choice, but the hole is in and the mill is now an inch wider. I also added a shield over the end of the bar. It's not an area where I would have placed my fingers, but better safe than sorry...

Need ideas on where to scrounge for logs or wood

A strong magnet on a rope might work for detecting steel in trees, but considering the cost is only a chain and the risk is pretty low, I can understand not bothering. I use a come-along, round wood for rollers, and levers to move logs when I can't use my tractor. You might want to get a cant...
