I believe you are right, after a bit of searching I am leaning Turkish sweet gum or some derivative there of.

    Tree id

Thats what i have been thinking but it has no balls. There's a number of these on the property and all the same no balls. Sweet gum are also here and produce the round spiky things.

    Tree id

This seemed as good as anyplace to put this. I cannot figure out what this is, it is probably obvious and my brain is not working. This is in northeast Atlanta, GA in mixed southern pin and other hardwoods. height is about 70'-80'. Everything is tall and narrow in this area.

    Wear those chaps people

Well if we are going down the rout of dumb stuff we have done that I knew better than to do. Back in May I was using a chop saw and cut too small of a piece of wood and did not have it clamped down to the bench. It jumped about a foot to the left and 8" in the air and this was the result. I...

    Your coldest weather

The coldest I have ever seen was when I was working in Wyoming, -51 before windchill. The official was about 10 degrees warmer but that was in town.

    Pine is for suckas!

I was thinking that I was the only one that liked pine. I got a good scrounge of pecan, oak, and cherry this year but miss the rocket fuel known as southern yellow pine. It lights easily ( a big consideration in Georgia) burns hot and fast with little ash and just enough coals to light off the...

    Shoulder season woes

Well all i can say is after running a brush down the chimney I am cleaning out the stove of the roughly 3 cups of soot that fell when the bag in my ash vac fails and I look to the right to find my well turn black. AHHHHHHHHHH

I think it's time for a new 'big' saw. Recommendations?

I am on Tapatalk so I cannot see your sig, sorry about that. If you can pull a 27 now I would go about big as your budget allows. I didn't do that and find myself with a 660 and an 880 ( darn Post oak!!!). 880's around here run about$1800 so not a huge leap from a 661. I am not sure about the...

I think it's time for a new 'big' saw. Recommendations?

If you are looking at the echo I would throw in the ms-461 in there also. What saws do you have currently and how often will it wear a big bar? My suggestion would change based on what you have now. If you have saws on the 40-50cc class I would go to the 75-80cc range. If you have something in...

    Name that wood

There may have been a smell when cutting but I was cutting next to a large pile of fresh cut oak that was really funky. Its been on the ground about a week now. The only odor when splitting is a slight generic plant smell. Everything you all are seeing is saying cherry, I can live with that as...

    Name that wood

I have no idea what this is. It has little to no smell, straight grained, splits easy, and is lighter weight than the pecan and oak that I have been cutting.

    Which $200-$300 splitter?

What I would recommend is what I am doing. Rent one and save money to buy one of higher quality. I pay $50 a day to a local rental company for a 30+ ton gas splitter and just be ready with all the wood ready and work fast. One day of splitting and done. Sent from this thing that doesn't ever...

    Opinions on fuel

They are in the second phase of testing that includes flight testing, phase one was to test interchangeability with existing leaded fuel.
