When I get a saw pinched I will just drive a wedge in to take the pressure off, then pull it out. Tip I do is... I cut in the woods then split. I never leave cut peices in the woods. Split enough to fill the trailer and bed. I cut three tops out in the woods a few years ago...

That log is HUGE ! Cut it on the trailer is the way to go.

Not to jack your thread BUT ... I bought a used log splitter from HD about 3 years ago for $700 with 9 hp Honda engine 22 ton still going strong !

To answer your question... the best way to split it is to use a hydrolic splitter. If you dont have a splitter use a sledge and a couple of wedges. Start on the edges of the rounds. After a little pratice you will get the hang of it.

If youre not going to buy any thing I would just get some locust logs about 10 feet long and lay down in the ditch until it fills in the void. It will suprise you how long it will stay there. If rain did push them out they will not go far.

I would just fill the ditch with logs and drive over them instead of making a bridge. I have did this and drove concrete trucks across ditches.

off set Off set the secondary split as said before. Also tilt the secondary slightly so that in first contact it will split and free the wood as it is passing threw. I did this to a splitter I was working on it did perfect. You might want to add a kick plate to the back of your wedge...
