Stihl 461 vs 044 (and older gen saws)

I personally say the 461 is noticeably more powerful and can run a 32" bar if desired but I commonly see them with 28"s whereas the older 044 can run a 28" but I almost exclusively see them with 25"s. Im sure this varies by geographic location but it has been said folks generally use bigger...

Let’s see the homemade Alaskan chainsaw mills!

My simplistic but IMO improvement over the Granberg Mk3. 1” steel construction. Thickness of cut is secured with double set screws. Only disadvantage of note is the setup time for different thicknesses. I want to make some spacer blocks to remedy this. Built to handle a 36” bar and 29” total...

    Red Oak

Nice man. Sure does look like a nice smooth cut. Smoother than I usually get with my full comp rip grind. I just acquired 2 fresh red oak logs from a recent tree removal at my work. One is 30"x 10 feet and the other is 20"x 15 feet. My 25" inch capacity homebrew mill should work for it. I...

New ms880 with 404 pitch 36" bar and chain

You can use skip tooth for milling but you will get less smooth of a finish. Just takes more planer time afterwards and you may have to cut the boards slightly thicker....like 1/16"

What size CSM do you guys run?

My homebrew CSM is permanently fixed to run an Oregon 32" bar which gives me right around 28" of cut width.

    Stihl TS700

Check muffler and spark arrestor screen and clean out the fuel tank vent. Two other possible causes. Another possible cause is the carb diaphragm. Need to get a carb kit to replace that. Maybe if there was grit inside the carb it was not quite cleaned out. Did you clean the nozzle and pull...

Need tips for re-bending the end of starter recoil springs?

It is best to not put more effort into overcomplicating things than the effort you put into actually doing what is was you set out to do in the first place. To start, my first choice on repairing a recoil spring is to replace it with a new one. Things aren't always so simple though. I have...

    Stihl 044 Rebuild

Your laundry list should include: crank seals, fuel line, fuel pickup body, spark plug, sealant, carb kit. And what ever components you need pertaining to the P&C.

Filing after sharpening with the chain grinder

I don't know about timber fallers but during storm cleanups, I will carry 4 spare and only go through 2 of them in a day unless there are extenuating circumstances. (rocks, sidewalks, steel fence posts, etc.) All this will tell anyone is that if you are careful you can get quite a bit of life...

    Stihl ms461 bar and chain

25” is excellent. Don’t want to sell your saw short on the bar when it carries 461 power. :muscle:

What?? No way. A Pole in the GR area..... Weird.

    Stihl ms461 bar and chain

If you wanted to run a 20” bar you may as well have gotten a 362. ;) I liked a 28” on the 46s. Standard weight. Balanced perfect and seemed to be the right length for around here.

    Very old saws.

My house was built in 1900 and the "story" is that it was built with the trees which were harvested on site. In 1900 around here, it is possible they were first growth trees. Nothing is hewn though so if it was done with on site trees, then there was also an onsite sawmill. In my youth, my...

Stump removal of overturned 30" locust

I have done it before to a partially overturned hickory. It was a 50" stump. Probably 10+ feet of root ball. Oddly, I had a 60hp tow behind Vermeer attached to a Kubota 6040 tractor. It took me around 5 hours to get it and the roots ground to the point that a backhoe with a root rake could...
