Get yourself a good grinder. They are about the same price as a good saw but will last a lifetime (if no one steals it). It will change your whole career as a timber faller. When cutting production I usually start with a sharp chain on my saw and six in my pack. I rarely have needed six but...

    The Descriptive Process

I don't think it is a western thing BUT if you think the stump is going to move towards you, stand on the other side. The tree will tell you if the stump is going to stand up or roll on over before you cut it off. Read the tension in the trunk as you cut it which you need to do to avoid pinching...

    Advanced Falling Cuts

Yes that was in Alabama a few years ago. They had over 100 tornadoes in one day and some serious straight line winds. I got conned into salvaging some of the storm damage for a couple months.

    The Descriptive Process

That is exactly what I was trying to describe if you add just a little angle to the cuts. The angle is usually not needed as the stump usually moves away from the butt if it is falling back into the hole

I can't open that page slowp. I have a crappy server. rwoods if your stump moves up to fall in the hole and hangs on the butt like a trigger sear, put your cuts in at an angle with the top away from the stump and the bottom closer. It usually does not take much angle at all. And make sure if...

    Advanced Falling Cuts

I had a bunch of hickory storm wood that was leaned way over. Most of the rest of the trees where on the ground but the hickory and a few elms held but where leaned about thirty or more degrees. Trying not to bust them wide open in a massive barber chair was a real challenge. They where tall...

    Forestry's Future

Just go on Google earth or satellite maps and look at Chetco river drainage, Kern river drainage, zoom in real close. Then zoom out and look at all the simular areas. These areas have been brought to you by environMENTal mismanagement.

    Forestry's Future

To me the biggest threats to the industry is environmental induced mismanagement and declining market.

    Forestry's Future

Since WWII the amount of land that has gone out of cultivation and grown up in timber across the nation is huge.

    Forestry's Future

I have seen countless more acres lost to wild fire and beetles than to any development or agriculture. To the point of being insignificant. The waste is just stunning.

What have had or seen go wrong wih your dawgs

I had a big spring pole launch a 394 into me at wot. Fortunately the chain brake worked and a couple cutters cut some curly cues out of my scalp. The impact knocked me back about ten feet. Not much damage but the dogs stabbed into my shoulder and it still hurts sometimes.

    The Descriptive Process

One fun thing about the eastern root balls in the clay is that after it rains the holes some times hold water till it is stagnated and gets full of frog eggs. It makes a lovely splash when the root ball falls back in the hole.
