Stihl 041av stopped suddenly won't start

That is a cool tool. I dropped the saw off to a very trusted mechanic today. His initial guess is coil went bad. After only 50 years!!! LOL

    Thank you.

Stihl 041av stopped suddenly won't start

I am thinking it is just a worn out on/off switch. The wire going to it looks fine though and it seems like that would not cause sudden stop while running fine.

Stihl 041av stopped suddenly won't start

No spark, at least grounding it against the painted handle. It is a different plug location so I can't touch bare metal as shown.

Stihl 041av stopped suddenly won't start

I have not checked for spark yet. Just pull the plug attach to plug wire and look for arc at plug I guess.

Stihl 041av stopped suddenly won't start

While doing some light cutting my 041av just stopped suddenly. It had been running for 10 minutes or so. I knew there was not a lot of fuel in it so guessed it had run out of fuel even though it usually indicates low fuel by bogging a little and then I stop it . This was sudden. I added fuel and...

    Stihl o41 no start

Can't take a picture. Dropped it off to my mechanic this morning. It is the electronic ignition model, not sure what carb. I will post results when I get it back. I just have a feeling it is a bad kill switch. I could have easily replaced it myself but was told they almost never go bad.

    Stihl o41 no start

That is my exact set up. I had to use a cresent wrench as there was no way to turn a socket.

    Stihl o41 no start

Thanks, I will clamp the plug to the frame with vice grips and pull to see if I have spark. I am sure it is not fuel. My plug looked "normal" but had some fuel on it from not starting. I will report my findings.

    Stihl o41 no start

I am not sure how to check spark. I did remove plug and with wire on plug pulled the rope. Without the plug grounded I did not expect much though.

    Stihl o41 no start

Impulse line? Not familiar with that. The fuel lines all look fine and I am assuming by putting fuel directly in carb and getting no difference rule out fuel. Thanks

    Stihl o41 no start

My o41 is not starting or firing. I have owned since new and it has always started on a couple pulls even when my rope was shortened to allow just a couple inches of pull. I replaced the rope but then realized the recoil mechanism was also bad. Still started fine but was back to the short pull...

Stihl 041 recoil starter assembly wanted.

My 40 year old 041 AV needed a new pull rope. I have installed it but now am only getting about a 4" pull. I have rewould and tensioned the spring several times with the same result. Thinking a new assembly might be the way to go. Anyone know where to locate one. Also like to have the oem part...

    New Stihl 241 or 261?

Got the 261 with 20" bar. only cut a few small poplar trees, but the weight difference from the old 041 is great. Now I just got to get used to working in high heels and a dress.

    New Stihl 241 or 261?

Thanks for all the replies. I am leaning toward the 261 as it has more power and just 1# heavier. The one I looked at had a 20" bar, not a 16". I am thinking of going with the 20 as I will probably use the 041 less and less. I got e-mail notifications for the first couple responses, but no idea...

    New Stihl 241 or 261?

I want a lighter saw than my vintage 041. Planning to get with 16" bar. I keep tools forever which is why I am paying for pro series saw. Cutting small trees 8-10" and firewood. Specs indicate the 241 is 9.9# and the 261 is 10.3#. Figured the extra power was worth the small weight difference...

    New Stihl saw purchase

Thanks for the responses. I will be cutting small 8-10" trees and firewood [ up to 30" felled oak]. I can still us the 041 for big stuff. I was planning on a 16" bar on the new saw. From what I can see the 241 weighs 9.9# and the 261 is 10.3#. I heard from the dealer the 261 has been around a...

    New Stihl saw purchase

I have decided my 041 is just too heavy for my old bones on a regular basis. I am considering a new 241 or 261. No, I am not a pro, and don't use every day. The extra $$ for a pro level saw does not bother me as I will own it for a long time. Any input is welcome. Please don't tell me about...

Stihl 028 av super, starts runs but dies when choke is switched off

Harley, Thanks for all the input. I ended up using both gaskets. One at the carb to the intake manifold, and then added one at the carb to air cleaner. The saw was doing about the same as before but improved when I added the second gasket. I was thinking the air leakage may have been from the...

Stihl 028 av super, starts runs but dies when choke is switched off

Got a new carb and it came with 2 gaskets. Both have holes that match the studs that hold the carb on. There was no gasket on either side of the carb I removed. Can not find an exploded view to tell if I need to install gasket or not.
