    New advertising.

I came here to say this. Why don't people smile in pictures? That being said it seems a little silly. People wants professionals and your website should convey your professionalism. I think dressing up in a doctors outfit is silly. The website is otherwise not bad especially compared to other...

    Justify a Bucket Truck Purchase

It depends how much use you'll actually use it. Davey uses them all the time for line clearance. My company would have almost no use for one. How often would you actually use it and when you do is it reducing man hours enough to justify the cost/gas/maintenance expenses that come with the truck?

    Making money off mulch?

A good question for an accountant. Whoever you donate too would probably need to supply a receipt of some sort. I'd imagine you'd be able to deduct whatever the going rate was for chips.

    Making money off mulch?

Anyone sell their mulch? Is so how do you do it? I usually just give it away but I can't imagine the bigger outfits like Davey do this.

    anyone use "ServiceMagic.com" ???

Pay-per-lead services always produce terrible results. I used ################ and treeservicedirect.com and both were awful and they were specific to our industry. ServiceMagic.com is too general to attract any real leads. Good customers will contact you directly and know enough to find local...

You guys get estimate calls like this?

I remember an old lady asking what we charged. I began my usual response, "Our minimum charge is $350 and..." she cuts me off and starts freaking out and saying that was robbery. I calmly explained that it's likely that it will be a lot more than that and explain why tree service is expensive...

    advice on vehicle vs bankruptcy

If this is your only vehicle the courts won't take it away. The courts realize that you need a vehicle to get to work.

How do you pay your crew?

Well, that's nice. Legally speaking you don't have a choice as to how you pay your guys. You have to pay them by the hour and that's that. I realize there's a lot of chainsaw charley types on this forum but my crew rarely milks their hours. Often times they want to knock off early because we get...

Angies List: an "A" from customer & "F" from non-customer

That's kind of a silly policy. People always email me asking for bids. I usually ENCOURAGE them to call as it's easier to pick a day/time over the phone rather than bouncing emails back and forth for a few days. However, if you're going to have your email on your website expect to get emails for...

Increase Advertising or change my bid?

Phonebook advertising is dead. Nobody uses the phonebook anymore. I get almost ALL my new clients from Google. I'm about to spend some money getting my webpage redesigned.

    Sample contract?

I wouldn't charge a cancellation fee but would instead hold them to the contract. Explain that they signed a binding contract and if they decide not to honor it they'll nevertheless still be responsible for the cost. Charging a cancellation fee does more harm than good and isn't worth the...

    Bad times?

Yes, much better **knock on wood** March, April and May were pretty bad. I think tax time really scared a lot of people but lately things have been much smoother. We're not making as much per job as we used to but our coffer is full again. I've spoken with other companies in our area who...

    Speaking of Yellow pages...

My instinct is to say that advertising in any phonebook other than the AT&T is just throwing your money away but even competing phonebooks look exactly the same as AT&T ones. I don't think clients would make a distinction between a generic book and the official AT&T one and would be apt to throw...
