    Mature oak response to thinning?

I realize epicormic growth is undesirable for commercial trees but these are for pleasure. Anything wrong with it in this case?

    Mature oak response to thinning?

Very helpful! Appreciate all you shared and will look into these things further.

    Mature oak response to thinning?

How about an open woodland/dense savanna with liberated closed grown trees? Still quite a bit of wind protection. Besides remaining trees am in a small basin.

    Mature oak response to thinning?

My land in MN had been left alone for at least 70 years. Trees have grown close together. Presently, I'm primarily concerned with oaks, mostly burr oaks that have reached canopy height, tall with narrow crowns. I'd like to keep the overall canopy but would rather have fewer, larger, and more...

    Any Reason for Concern?

Hi Raintree, thanks for your response. I will look into your diagnosis of veinal chlorosis. Not a construction site. Oak wilt is a big problem in MN but I'm not seeing development elsewhere in the crown or neighboring trees.

    Any Reason for Concern?

Hi Guys! This leaf fell off a burr oak I'm fond of yesterday. Not sure what to make of it. From the ground my untrained eye doesn't spot any large areas of discoloration in the crown. I'm not sure, however, this issue would be noticeable from a distance even if all the leaves looked similar...

Oak Wilt - A couple of less common questions

I live in an oak woodland with oak wilt nearby. I’ve had several large red oaks fail over recent years from structural non wilt related reasons. One fell on its own and the other two I had to drop because they threatened my home. I still have the bottom sections of these 3 large trunks yet to...

To Fell or Not to Fell?

All's well that ends well! Wind was up yesterday. Made me anxious, so I felled this the day before. Attached a 3/8" steel cable just above the lower break. My neighbor pulled with a chain fall. I made standard cuts. Tried to go easy. Everything went smoothly. Unfortunately, worry over the...

To Fell or Not to Fell?

Thanks for your input guys! It's reassuring to know that everyone agrees with high certainty. Your unease about weakness at the break is also influential. Appreciate your efforts to respond!

To Fell or Not to Fell?

Firstly, I apologize for the quality of the photos. Conditions were somewhat difficult and I was not aware that quality was lacking until returning indoors. If you need better photos in order to respond, let me know what perspective you'd like and I'll try to get it for you. The Tree - A large...

Dead limbs - to prune or not?

Thanks for your reply! Wasn't sure what you meant here: "Some think they need to prune for big volume of chips and removing just a few dead limbs isn't enough." Could you explain? Mostly, I guess I'll continue but think twice about deadwooding that remote tree in my backyard.

When to rely on nature and when to prune?

Fungus on dead or suffering limbs causes me concern for the whole tree. I'm aware that trees have the ability to protect themselves and a superficial understanding of the 4 types of compartmentalization. Observation, seems to have taught me that these defenses don't always work. Sometimes the...

Dead limbs - to prune or not?

From the perspective of tree health only, assuming proper cutting technique, can you think of a time when it would be better to leave a dead limb on a mature deciduous tree, oak, black cherry, elm. or ash to be specific, rather than remove it? If so, please describe it. Alternatively asked, is...

    Developmental Problem with Northern Catalpa

Thanks for your insights Del! This little limb on this little tree might imply a little case but the tree will get bigger, as you say, and the principles you've shared can be applied elsewhere. I've learned somethings here and appreciate the time you took to communicate them.

    Developmental Problem with Northern Catalpa

Thanks Del! I hate to lose that limb but your advice seems reasonable and a more gentle way of removing the limb than lopping the whole thing off at once now. I surmise there's no way to harden or strengthen and reshape it while bearing its current load. Am I right? Is your recommendation to...

    Developmental Problem with Northern Catalpa

Hi, My wife loves catalpa blossoms. I think they're pretty swell too. We count ourselves lucky to have a volunteer sapling on our property and I'm trying to encourage it. Unfortunately, an important structural branch at the base of the crown partially broke from the trunk about a year ago after...

    Sick Oaks

White Oak Could that fungus on the white oak be anything other than wilt? Do you think it still poses a threat to my woodland? Do I need to burn the wood asap or ok to stack for later? I'm not seeing visible signs lower down the trunk. Would that mean it likely hadn't infected the roots or its...

    Sick Oaks

Hi, I cut down a couple of oaks in my yard recently due to illness. One white and one red. The white one (first 3 photos below) was alive but struggling. After dropping it, it became apparent hat it has a white fungus beneath the bark in one spot and on the outside of the bark as well. The...

    Girth Gain in Canopy Trees?

My property was an oak savanna that became a woodland ultimately comprised of a large proportion of buckthorn and boxelders weed trees which I've recently removed. The older trees were large spreading oaks. There are also quite a few woodland grown oaks as well as black cherry, ash, and elm...
