    Axe restoration thread

Glad to hear! That was a bit of a project. In its condition I might have passed it up on my own, but in the spirit of sentimentality, I just couldn't - and it ended up turning out great with lots of serviceable years remaining.

Many thanks for a surprise gift from our esteemed member, @LondonNeil ! What a beautiful little 2.25 lb Elwell Kent Patterns axe - I've always wanted a nice Kent pattern! Such a classically historic and old design. What better way to show it off than sitting atop a 25kg sack of my favorite...

    From shade to firewood!

Nice! Ever tried or considered making acerglyn?

    The most underrated firewood.

Ailanthus altissima I was about to say the same thing! Catches fast, burns hot and lasts a good bit. Not long like real hardwoods, but good enough. I hate the damn tree, but I'd rather season and burn the straight grains stuff than haul it off. Smells awful, though, as I'm sure you know. I...

    Thought I was finished.

Had a warm spell over the past few days, even had to turn on the AC (yes, I love the AC and cool temps, I don't care if you live without it - too warm makes me miserable, can't sleep, sweat too much). I cleaned up the stove and put the ash vac away, but now it seems a spell of cooler weather...

    Thought I was finished.

For the past month I've been running the stove still in the morning to take the chill off about half of the says. A mild, warm winter has made for a brisk, wet and chilly early spring. Once the sun gets high enough, the wood heat and radiant solar heat combined makes the indoors very...

    Home owner wood chipper?

I got an old MTD chipper/shredder with a 6hp Briggs engine from my father-in-law a few years ago. Didn't run, ended up rebuilding it, taking off the flywheel cutter, sharpening the blades, fixed the engine and got it running. The thing is, the cutting wheel, at least on this one, was direct...

This is good advice. Rags soaked in BLO can spontaneously combust, it's not a myth. The drying process as the oil polymerizes creates heat. In the right conditions, a rag that has dry spots or is near some paper, it can catch fire on its own from the heat built up by the chemical reaction while...

Paging @dancan — I hear that Spruce ain't so bad. Mostly pitch pine rounds these parts, but I've burned some hemlock before and it was pretty good fuel!

    Social Distancing

Social distancing... it's one of those new contemporary phrases that I just don't get, and it kind of bugs me.... just a little.... kind of like the use of the word "unprecedented" in the news. Being someone who is mostly introverted, social distancing is something that I never really thought of...

It sure is! Thanks to @kuhndog for hooking me up with it! He told me it was to start with some ether, so I took her home, cleaner her up, pulled the old felt fuel "filter" and cut an 1/8" off the end and stuck it back on. With some coaxing it was able to start reliably, but tuning the carb was...

Thank you, sir! Woodyard was looking a wretched mess for several months, but with the mild weather and extra daylight hours I've been able to clean it all up. The saw is work in progress, it's a first gen 10-10, rebuilt the fuel line/filter and carburetor, but it's still finicky. I'd say maybe...

Got everything split and stacked before Easter. I gave away (donated) a lot Ash rounds but kept enough to put up another 2-3 cords. Currently 8 cords, or 3 years worth of firewood. White Ash, Black Cherry, Red Oak, and Black Locust.

    Firewood heating vs virus

Hmmm... I'm a little confused. I typically stock up on everything, all the time. It's just my nature and benefits my household during situations like this. The virus hysteria notwithstanding, I'd just buy the truckload, then cut and split it myself and stack em' deep. My only concern right now...

    Future firewood, Virus?

We have a newer, efficient electric heat pump. Works very well, but we love wood heat and have access to plenty of wood to cut and have had a constant supply just in our modest little property. We have about 5 cords stacked seasoned about a year already, with another 2.5 cords stacked almost as...

I could afford a gas hydro splitter, but nah. Last thing I need is a large piece of equipment to store and maintain. Also, dealing with gasoline, the noise, levers and picking up heavy rounds. The only bending over I prefer to do is when picking up the splits and stacking them. Plus it's a good...
