How Much is a Straight Gassed Dolmar PS 4600 Worth???

Interesting. Makita is a well known chainsaw brand around here as well and parts can be found as well, but in other parts of Europe it's often different. Scandinavia is all about Husqvarna. Especially entry level saws are often cheaper in Russia. A Stihl MS180 is around 160€ brand new, much...

How Much is a Straight Gassed Dolmar PS 4600 Worth???

It's always a friend/neighbour/brother in law who broke it, never the guy himself. Starting to see a pattern there. :) If he comes down from 90 bucks to say 60 I'd probably get it, if the rest of the saw is fine. I actually just restored a plated cylinder with quite a bit of piston transfer on...

How Much is a Straight Gassed Dolmar PS 4600 Worth???

He should maybe send you a picture of the cylinder walls if he can. I mean the top end is off anyway. I'm not knowledge on Dolmar/Makita saws. I know a place around here that sells Makita saws and they seem very solid with all of them, except the very bottom end of their line, have metal cases...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Here is the saw after a quick adjustment. Has since been adjusted with a tachometer. Idles at 2.700 now. The very first start took about 6 pulls.

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Thanks! Yes, it will create problems. I have a picture of the intake side on here, which I just cleaned up with some scotchbrite and it does look nice. The exhaust side is quite a bit different. I slightly sanded it to get rid of sharp edges, but the scoring is still there. I wish I didn't rush...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Here are some pics of the piston and the little contraption I came up with to grind down piston rings to proper thickness. Apparently, there are multiple versions of the pistons for the 036 and newer ones have thicker rings. I have an old one, so it doesn't fit. And, of course, the ones I need...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

It lives! I'm still experimenting. Put a scored piston in there to see how far I can go and still have the saw run. Of course the piston has been smoothed out, the grooves redone and I had to make a new piston ring, but the saw runs and idles. Pictures and videos if anyone is interested. And...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Okay, thanks! Gives me confidence. I'll try without the crosshatch first, seems smooth enough for now. Unfortunitely it will take half an eternity for those hones to get here, but they sure are nice. Did you have problems with the hone catching on the ports?

Looks very nice. How much time did it take to get it there?

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Very helpful post, much appreciated! I noticed That the hone takes off more at the ports and used a fine lapping paster with very frequent checks to not take off too much at once. Unfurtunately, acid is not that easy to get around here, so I did the honing method. I hit it with a finer paste to...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Hey, Brad! Since it's my first time doing this I would like to ask stupid questions just to make sure. How do you know when you're actually through the plating? Color change, very soft aluminum that scratches easily? Should I crosshatch it and how fine of a finish do you put on the cylinder...

    Stihl 044 fuel line help

After a quick research, it seems like both the #1128 358 7703 and #1128 358 7701 lines go on the 044/MS440 and apparently also that Oregon one Bob posted a picture of. If it can be done without drilling, just with a different fuel line it's even better of course. I just can't comment on the...

    Stihl 044 fuel line help

Yeah, not easy to access. May not be the prettiest job ever, but even if it's at an angle, as long as the hole is slightly smaller than the diameter of the line between the grommets, it has no chance but to seal. There's really a grommet overkill on those lines.

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Thanks for the reply! The cylinder is smooth to the touch. I also keep a pick with a sharp tip to locate scratches. There's one scratch left which isn't deep anymore and I probably won't bother. The ring trick is a nice one. Right now I can get compression by just moving a piston back and forth...

    Stihl 044 fuel line help

Like I said, I drilled mine out. Slightly smaller hole than the diameter of the portion between the inside and outside grommets, put a little 2-stroke oil on it, poked the grommet with a dull flathead a few times to push it in and that was it. Before drilling it's good to drain any fuel and I...

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Thank you for the reply! Yeah, I've seen that video. Did a bit of research before attempting this. I made a hone that has flaps of sandpaper on it, removed transfer and smoothed out the whole cylinder. From my understanding, the thickness of the coating is about .008 or 0.2 mm. It's easy to...

    Stihl 044 fuel line help

Yep. And I'm guessing the one you have is for later models and it also fits the MS440. I had the same problem with an 036. Ended up drilling a bigger hole in the tank, because those thicker lines is all that's available to me.

Nikasil cylinder cleanup pics and questions.

Good evening, gentlemen! I'm currently trying to clean up a Nikasil plated cylinder from an 036. It had some aluminum transfer from the piston and some scoring. I tried please clean it up with sandpaper but the plating is very hard and it doesn't really do anything. So I went ahead and took some...

    Chinese piston/cylinder kit total annihilation.

Absolutely. This right here is just not a secure connection. Even on OEM pistons this tends to happen sometimes, depending on the position of the opening of the circlip.

Nothing a little duct tape couldn't fix.:)
