    the stihl 038 magnum thread

Can't complain with my 038S. I'd pickup a magII without a second thought if I could find one locally. The 038's are heavy, but built to last IMHO.

    Cutting a leaner

I always have a sharp ass chain ;) Indeed, it isn't a particularly large... probably 16-18'' in diameter and 60-70' tall. It's reaching for sun on a north-facing slope and has a few dead branches in the canopy. Many thanks all.

    Cutting a leaner

Unfortunately, I didn't snap any pics of the tree before heading back home from the lot. Will take a few before she falls. I'm thinking of boring as that is how I was taught to fall a leaner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T_S7RyNe1o http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=RWXWh6wDOXY

    Cutting a leaner

I have a real leaner that needs to be taken down and I'm a little unsure how to proceed. The tree is a yellow/paper birch with a few rotten top branches but the butt & trunk looks sound. I'm felling in the direction of the lean and, besides adjacent trees, there are no obstructions below...

    064 Value?

So what did you sell it for? Curious because there is a fellow with an 064 around here who's taking offers for his.

just bought a 395xp, the chain brake handle is very flimsy feeling:/

My advice is similar to Nitroman. At this point, I suggest that you write a polite but firm letter to the dealer and explicitly CC the shop owner and Husky USA. If you do not have contact info for the latter, you should call the Husky service line and ask for the name and address for the...

    Chainsaw Mill and MS361

I'm new to milling but everything I've read suggests that trying to mill 20'' hardwood with a 361 (or similar sized < 70 cc saw) isn't a great idea. You may want to ask the folks here for their thoughts. If you were to do it, I'd stick to short milling lengths as the saw will cut rather slowly...

    Stand for small diameter logs

sawbuck I'm pretty sure I can work something out from your photos. Many thanks. Apparently, another common name is a sawbuck.

    Stand for small diameter logs

This is for cottage use... i.e. definitely not for profit. I look after about 15 acres of woodlands for my in-laws and they use any firewood I cut for heating a drafty old cottage. The soil is rocky so bucking smaller logs and limbs on the ground can be problematic.

    Stand for small diameter logs

Does anyone have a better picture? I stole that one from the Stihl site but I know I've seen better photos here... just can't seem to find any at the moment. EDIT: Apparently the phrase to search for is 'sawhorse' in google images.

Stand for small diameter logs (sawhorse) Does anyone have plans for a log stand for sawing smaller diameter logs? Something like this:

opinions Does anyone have an opinion on these? I saw it mounted on a saw in the milling forum but cannot find the thread.

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

She's already hinted that the 038 is to heavy for her so I don't think she'll be keen on the 394. Given the saw is 200 miles away, I think I may try and convince her to make a weekend trip of it... we'll find a nice B&B with a jacuzzi tub for her and I'll get a saw.

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

Many thanks for the comments huskydave. I'm in southern Ontario so dealer support is generally good with a few stihl and husky dealers within 1 hr should I need them. None of the local dealers stock larger/pro saws. The pros in the area tend to stick with 372 or a 044 so the dealer techs are...

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

Thanks all. I've been looking for a milling/big saw for a few months now but I really can't afford the cost of a new saw. When sharp, the 038S doesn't struggle with much, but I wouldn't dare mill anything with it. Any advice on how to tell the wife that I'm going to look at another saw?

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

I have an inexpensive Equus gauge. It has a release valve but on the gauge, not the threaded insert. Would this be sufficient? In either case, I'll pull the muffler, check the piston and rings for scoring and then fire it up. The guy sounded reasonable on the phone; he knows what it's...

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

Its about 300km away and I expect it has been well used / well maintained as the fellow selling it builds log homes from local pine. I was planning to take a look at the piston and will certainly run / cut with it. I have a compression guage that I'll bring with me but I'm not sure what 'good'...

Advice on buying a husky 394xp

I'm looking to get a larger saw for some 'hobby' milling and found a 394 for sale locally. A few questions: - general thoughts... good saw? bad saw? - is there anything specific that I should ask about and/or watch out for? - what should the compression be? I've looked at a few 066s...

    Pioneer 650 questions

Thanks. I've checked the Oregon site but cannot find any mention of supporting Pioneer bars. Anyone know of other options?
