    McCulloch Chain Saws

2 stroke exhaust theory is weird science! I think I would make a bunch of plates with various sized holes and test them buried in a log at WOT to see which produced the best power. I would be willing to bet that the best power producing baffle plate would still have that sweet sweet McCulloch...

    McCulloch Chain Saws

New addition to the stable. I picked up a Pro Mac 10-10 off Craigslist. It started on the 6th pull and ran on the 7th. Revs well, settled down to a stable idle, oils the bar very well. Now I've gotta clean it up and sit it beside its big brother my Pro Mac 60..... ..for now it is visiting its...

    "You Suck" Thread 2018--Pics required!

I scored a Pro Mac 10-10 today. The guy on Craigslist wanted $40 for it but I told him I'd give him $50 if he held it for me since I had to drive to Portland for it. It fired on the 6th pull and ran on the 7th. Revs well, settled to a stable idle.....I'm pleased!

    Fuel Color

I often use VP @ cycle oil. Usually I use VP or Stihl oil at 40/1 ratio from the little bottles, and then add some Valvolene 2 cycle oil to bring it up to a 32/1 ratio. I use a Ratio Rite container to get the mix correct. I also rinse out the little bottle as well as the Ratio Rite pitcher to...

If it won't foul a plug at 32/1, it sure won't at 200/1.....

    Fuel Color

I bought a gas can at a yard sale for $2. It was full of red gas and marked "good mix" with a marking pen. I didn't trust unknown gas-mix so I used it up in 4-stroke mowers etc. at about 1 quart per gallon (somewhere around 200-1 ratio). I thought it might have been off-road diesel in there...

    Homelite Chainsaws

I got workin' in the man cave today. I snapped a photo of the 330 intake boot in the reed cage. Then I started on my Fleebay 3100G cylinder. It had been dropped/smacked on the skirt, and needed some TLC. I found an old Honda CR125 piston that fit well, and taped some emery paper to it and sanded...

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

The chain needs oil. The velocity of the oil is irrelevant. Restricting the oil passage at the bar reduces the amount of oil delivered to the bar over time (oz/min or whatever). Added to this is the fact that Stihl bars oil only when the clutch engages and the chain moves, so the flow during...

Huztl Thinks They Should Have My Videos

Before I modified the oil pump on my 029, I bought a cheap Chinese oil pump with lines &filter for about $8 shipped. I disassembled the pump and studied it on the dining room table. It was clean, so no mess, but I would NEVER consider installing such a piece of junk in my saw. It did allow me to...

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

MontanaResident, this morning while making coffee, I thought..."hey, one of those infared thermometers would be way more practical". It would be handy for other stuff as well, like checkin' for a hot bearing, or electric motor running hot.

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

How much is too much? That is the question..... I've been thinking of taping or otherwise fastening a children's forehead thermometer tape to a bar, and noting the temperature near the sweet spot. That would seem to be the best way to determine if the bar is getting enough oil. If it gets hot...

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

I should have added.....that if it oils too much, it can be turned down by the adjuster.

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

I'm not buying Stihl's velocity theory. A restricted orifice will decrease flow...think a smaller main jet, or the flow restriction nozzle on a faucet. Increasing the volume of oil pumped per rev of the pump will deliver more oil. Removing a restriction (tiny bar hole getting drilled larger)...

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

Stihl's are oil stingy........especially the newer ones. If you are running a bar on the long side, I think you will benefit from the mod. I've seen lots of Stihl bars that are burned brown in the sweet spot from inadequate oiling!

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

I think I posted a link to a competing forum so that is My Bad!!! Sorry folks. For those wanting the tech info, a web search about modifying a Stihl 044 Oiler will get you to the spot.

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

I followed the steps in this thread from the *********. I only modded the cup end of the pump shaft. I thought the mods to the cam end were risky, because I couldn't determine if the shaft was case hardened for wear resistance. http://************/threads/stihl-044-oiler-mod.9271/ I apologize...

Drilling out the bar's oil hole

If it still seems to be insufficiently oiling, you might want to modify the cupped end of the oil pump worm gear. I modified the gear on my 029 so I didn't burn my new bar!

    McCulloch Chain Saws

I got the Pro Mac 60 out today. I cut some fir tops left on my neighbors property. They are going to be round versions of 4x4's for my woodshed expansion. Everything got a workout today, the Mac, my Tacoma ( my skidder/log truck) my bark spud, and me!!!
