Chainsaw (window) shopping; the longest bar I ever saw.

A bit off topic here- but I graduated from 8th. grade in Fortuna in 1968. In '72 or '73 I was stealing split stuff from the National Park at the mouth of Redwood creek near, Orick (hope the Statute of Limitations has expired by now!), when I met a tourist from LA. He offered to pay $5 a slice...

Chainsaw (window) shopping; the longest bar I ever saw.

Back in my ill-spent youth (1972-73 or there about) I worked with a guy that had a ten foot (120") bar on a Stihl 090 gear drive that he used for felling old growth redwood snags. It used to stay on his old Catapillar D8 (14A series) which it fit perfectly. With the powerhead sitting on the...

    Carbon build up

Worked great on old aircooled VWs. Used to have a couple of them when I lived in Phoenix, which unfortunately required a smog check before registration renewal. Mine was due in February which meant a built in problem in finding the time to get it ready for smog check. Step one in getting it...

    Carbon build up

Ever see the insides of a water-injected (ADI) aircraft? Squeaky clean. Thermal shock knocks the deposits loose. Since water doesn't lubricate all that well it's probably not a good idea in a 2 stroke. Porosonik.

Oil Mix Ratios and Cylinder Head Temperatures

Just throwing out a few factiods here: 1). gasoline has about 18,800 BTUs per pound. 2). Ethyl alcohol has 13,000 BTUs per pound. 3). lube oil has quite a bit more latent heat energy than gasoline- I'd guess around 20,000 BTUs per pound. 4). "octane rating" has to do with the speed in which...

People don't yet take battery operated chainsaws seriously.

I used to work with big trees for a living. The biggest I ever dealt with measured 16 1/2' by 17 1/2' across the stump. An electric saw probably wouldn't have been a good choice- especially since we're talking 1975. The proper tool then was a Mac Super Pro 125 with a 101B cart engine in it...

    Partner 7000 saw

You could do a lot worse than an older Partner! When I was in aircraft mechanic school in 1979-1981 I worked as a mechanic for Smith Tool and Fastener in Kansas City, Missouri. They were the Midwest distributor for A.B. Partner at the time- any saw sold between the Rockies and the Appalchians...

    Yes another chain/saw question

I have to admit this thread has so far been entertaining- much like watching a good train wreck in slow motion. Some of the folks here are putting Much too much stress into chain tensioning and adjustment. When I was but an innocent youngster, I worked as a landing chaser/second loader for...

Any of you come across deliberate sabotage?

Back in Northwest California in the 1970's I saw plenty of it. This was pretty much during the height of the "Save The Redwoods" frenzy, and the Friends of the Earth were very active in and around Humboldt county with their "monkeywrenching". Trees and logs were getting spiked regularly, and...

    Breaking in a noob

Did he quit because he'd auditioned for "Axe Men" and got the part? Jeez! Back in my day there would have been bloodshed after the first mis-decked logs...

Northern California logging in the 1960s

I was feeling adventurous and decided to try posting some photos.... I'm not real sharp with this computer stuff, so bear with me. Porosonik.

You might be a logger if...

If you take the battery out of the crummy every morning to start the loader... and then take the battery out of the loader to start the Cat..... you just might be a Gyppo. Porosonik.

    Humboldt County...where it's the 60s forever

I think the best response to the behavior of the protesters in the video would involve three Bald Faced hornet’s nests and a leaf blower. Entertaining to watch, and “earth friendly” if the leaf blower is battery powered. Porosonik.

    PAY ATTENTION OUT THERE

Situational awareness, or the lack thereof, can rear up and get you with surprising speed and efficiency. This is why the old timers taught us to look after everybody else and trust no one if it could be possibly avoided. I can give three examples of the fruits of not paying enough attention...

    Breaking in a noob

As a noob I did my “apprenticeship” in the redwood patch of North West California in the early 1970s. Growing up in a time and place completely dominated by logging didn’t hurt, but my greatest advantage was getting to work with the last of the old ‘40s and ‘50s loggers. They managed (and I’m...
