Have a Stihl 291 but thinking Echo 490

I have one, and it’s great. I watched Amazon for while and got a brand new one in the box from a non-Prime seller for $289 plus $15 shipping. I agree that it feels better with a 16” or 18” bar, but I’ve been impressed with how well it pulls the 20”.

Looking for a 50ish cc saw

Welcome, Sir! I agree with the Echo recommendations whole-heartedly! I have a 490 and I love it! But for what you’re describing, I’d say start with the bigger 590 (or something else you like in the 60-70 cc range), then add a lighter saw once you’ve sold a few loads. I’m basically reiterating...

Buy the 562xp or the 365? Christmas bonus burning a hole in my pocket!

    562XP ... especially with 20” bar.

    Saw upgrade

Goody- if this has already been answered, I apologize, but are you still going to be running the 251 for the light stuff? It seems the 372 and other 70cc ideas a smidge big, ESPECIALLY if that’s all you’ll be using. It sounds to me like you’ll be needing a good 60cc saw tops.

    Saw upgrade

I agree with Huntaholic about the 562. It is, in my mind, the best saw in its size/power/weight class. However if your budget conscious, you might look at the Echo 590. It’s $400 most days and places, and it offers a lot! Strictly speaking, it’s not a pro saw, but I think it’s the probably the...

    New 562XP

I used one of those Saturday to work up 5 locust trees. I was running side by side with an ms362c-m. The Stihl was alright... the Husky was unstoppable!

    Possible Stihl 039 project

All good to know, hopefully it will be a simple fix and it’ll last me a while as a felling saw with 24” bar. 10-20 cuts/year max. Alas, hunting season happened to me last night. Went out thinking I’d “just look around to see what the deer are doing...” Yeah right, decent buck had to walk right...

    I've searched... Oil Thread

I use Husqvarna because a case came in where I work part time, and the labels were all jacked up so it couldn’t be sold off the shelf. Closing manager that night gave the the case for $1.00.

    Possible Stihl 039 project

Giving me the saw was afterthought. I’m cleaning up some family property with the intent to eventually re-cultivate deciduous forest, and there is more here than we will burn. We cut down 5 locust trees, and he was happy to have them and help remove them. Mostly we burn oak if we can, and I...

    Possible Stihl 039 project

Will do as soon as I have it apart. This is going to be an educational process for me, so I may have some dumb questions along the way.

    Possible Stihl 039 project

Just this past Saturday a friend gave me, in exchange for a few cords of wood, an 039 Stihl that he got new in the 90's. He's taken good care of it, but never worked on it himself. It has been a firewood saw in national forest and farm land primarily cutting oak or locust. I would say on average...

    Best Deal?

I would fight through the shyness and stop hiding behind the keyboard. Not to be mean, but we can only give opinions and suggestions. Going in face to face is going to be what gets you the best deal and starts making things happen.

    Best Deal?

With that kind of price difference, I can’t imagine $1099 being apples to apples. If so, I would ask your local dealer if they can work on the price given the competitive options.
