Replacement for B&S 650 series engine

Trying to help my dad find a replacement for his log splitter engine. He has a Huskee 650 series 22 ton splitter and the engine is held together by ratchet straps and bungees at the moment. Feels like you're going to tear it apart when starting, and won't start in cold weather. He's had it and...

What's going on with this MS250 chain?

I'm assuming I can stick with the 3/8 then since it's moving OK with the bar I have on there?

What's going on with this MS250 chain?

Link to video here: I have a Stihl MS250 and I'm not sure what's going on with the chain. Specifically, I have 2 stihl chains that have a 2 stamped on the depth gauge and a 6 on the drive link. I also have 3 generic chains I got last summer with a 6 on the drive link. According to Stihl...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Certainly not the biggest and best in the world, but it gets the job done. I don't mind the grinding one bit usually, unless it's pine, but I have to get them down to a few inches hit them with the grinder unless I want to be there all day. This style of grinder tends to want to suck you in if...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Yep did all that, and I chipped away the outer layer of the cut line with a spud bar. Actually did about three-quarters of that stump with that ugly chain I originally posted since I sharpened it last night and it did okay

Sitting here looking at the job in front of me, I think it becomes obvious why the chains get beat up, right?

I was thinking about that earlier. Just got 3 new full chisel chains in the mail today, and I have never used semis, but I will give that a shot next time I need to get some.

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Going to check out the rest of that thread there after I check out the other two, but I looked at the post Philbert referenced in that one earlier. Looks like a lot to learn. With that jig, I don't scrape back against the tooth when I finish in-to-out file strokes. I do remove it all the way...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Going to read over those threads now but you seem to be knowledgeable of the HF grinder so I wanted to ask you a couple of things. First: the brake only seems to catch half of the link, causing the front of the link to jump up a little when the wheel hits the tooth. Is that what it's supposed...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

This seems like a stupid question, but is the corner you're referring to literally the point of the tooth? If not, can you give me an idea of what I'm supposed to be looking for?

saw is in the vice and I am adjacent to the body on the right if that makes sense.

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Incidentally, I don't know how much you'll be able to tell from this, but this is the same chain and I'm seeing what happens with the grinder just to experiment a little. Can't mess it up any further, so... Anyway, I upped the height a little on the wheel so I'm not going as far in, and am...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Yeah I gotcha now. Going to get kind of aggressive with the grinder wheel and take a bit off just to see how it does. Trust me, I know how much I need to learn about sharpening. It wasn't bad when I was just cutting firewood but these stumps are killing me. I hate using my saw anymore because...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

I see the wear on the bearings that you're talking about, but can you elaborate on the tooth or teeth you're talking about with the 1/8" thing so I can see what you're referring to? Or anyone else if they know?

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Got 3 new ones in the mail today but I want to play with this one a bit to try to learn from it in the way I shape them. My biggest complaint with that harbour freight grinder was that it seemed to almost file the tooth flat without any kind of curve. Maybe I'm expecting too much of a curve...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

Any thoughts as to why I'm having so much trouble being able to file my rakers down with a new flat file?
  17. JeffRH

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

That makes sense as I do a lot of stumps down to a couple of inches to get them ready for grinding. I just got 3 new chains today, but I'd imagine they're going to just head in the same direction. Any advice on how to file them as I start using the new ones? Shouldn't have to throw chains away...

    Absolutely disgusted with my sharpening

I can't seem to sharpen worth a damn. I have a newly sharpened chain on my saw and had to basically lean on it to get it to go through a 5" limb. Brand new bar recently after 8 years, new file on my granberg jig (also have one of those HF grinders but I've given up on that and an back to hand...

    Curved cuts even after grinder

It has not been, which was my first thought, but then when the second chain worked fine in it I assumed that meant it had to be the chain.

    Curved cuts even after grinder

Seems to me that every time I read about curved cuts the answer is always "teeth are uneven - take it to a grinder and it should even it out". I just got a grinder a couple of weeks ago but haven't been totally impressed by it so I borrowed my dad's yesterday. Sharpened one chain on his, and one...
