How would you tackle splitting big Doug Fir rounds?

I'd give them a few whacks with a maul to see how they split, if they split nice with a maul its faster than using the splitter vertical. If they don't split with a couple hits of the maul and there's not that many of them or they're in the woods and I can't move them to the splitter whole I'll...

    Chainsaw grinder vice centering

with the back knob tight there's a 1/16" space between the black and gray pieces in the circle. So that 1/16" gap disappears with downward pressure on the stop. like the black or gray piece there isn't flat and its allowing the black piece to rock downwards despite the clamping knob 3" above...

    Chainsaw grinder vice centering

Just got an oregon 520 grinder which is made by the same company. I noticed as soon as I began using it that the depth stop is maybe not as stuff as I'd like. With a bit more or a bit less pressure the grinding wheel height ends up being slightly different, which is probably not going to do the...

cutting down leaning, hollow, large trees over targets.

I usually use a clove hitch when attaching a rope to a come a long hook. I have a hook hitch for my pickup that I use either a clove hitch or a "pile hitch" with a couple extra wraps around the standing end before dropping the loop onto the hook. Its usually a midline attachable method needed...

Looking for free standing firewood row end ideas

sometimes I use rebar about 6' long hammered into the ground about 2' deep. pound in two and drop a pallet over them. lean it inwards at maybe 15 degrees and the side pressure from the wood will have it more or less vertical once its stacked. and pallets on the bottom since its on dirt. or...

Discover Channel Shows Dangerously Irresponsible Chainsaw Work

I get the feeling it isn't limited to just this show on the Discovery channel. The whole channel just seems like a TV tabloid aiming towards rural america. Although I don't watch a whole lot.

    Firewood- favorite saw

Ms250 16" and husky 450 18" are what I use. I have a husky 455 but I don't really use it much it's 3lbs heavier than the 450 but not really any more power. Sometimes it would be nicen to have something bigger.

    Log Splitter Pauses before Splitting??

Something I thought of looking at the pictures of the mtd splitters. I assume cylinders are self bleeding when they have the ports at the top but the MTDs I looked up have the cylinder ports rotated to the side. Then again I don't see how it could have enough air to stall that long.

Does wood burning really reduce CO-2?

Burning firewood is carbon neutral. It releases CO2 that came from the atmosphere and that was going to return to the atmosphere when the wood rots in the woods. If you drive a truck and heat with firewood your carbon footprint is likely LOWER than someone who drives a Prius and burns 800...

    Burning REALLY WET wood.

seasoned for years but stored damp will dry fast. I put a cord of old **** from the bottom of my wood pile in my basement next to the wood stove with a fan blowing on it 24/7. It went from 40% to 20% in two weeks then 20% to 8% in two weeks. The first couple days the water coming out of it was...

    Log Splitter Pauses before Splitting??

Is it possible you just have a big air bubble in the cylinder you have to bleed out? Does the ram ever jump forward when a log splits clean in the first couple inches?

    Twisted Wedges for Splitting

what about felling wedges where you do the twisting instead of the wedge. for real though, I think those 'diamond wedges' are specifically meant for that first split right in the center. https://www.amazon.com/s/?url=&field-keywords=diamond+wedge

Why no electric battery and cord saws?

I bet someone makes one like that. Last summer I picked up a ryobi weedwhacker on the side of the road that was battery powered and had a plug, although the batteries could only charge on the charger.

Tell me how to keep from getting ate up with poison ivy everytime I walk through it please.

There's a vaccine for poison ivy being developed called PDC-APB. Its in phase I so its like 4-6 years out from being released (assuming it doesn't end up causing some weird side effects in its trials).... something to look forward to, I guess. I read about it one time when I was nearly laid up...

    Chainsaw hour meter?

There's no reason they couldn't put an hour meter on every small engine made today. I think they should. I don't think there's any demand for it, though, so it wont happen. It would be ridiculously useful though. forums like this would gather real data from members about the lifespan of...
