    STIHL Progressive Depth Gauge Tool

Feel like I’ve used the Euro Stihl gauge enough now to offer some opinions. It’s much harder steel that the husky gauge, but could stand to be a bit harder still. The hard setting in my timber is about as close to perfect as I can imagine. Very smooth, but aggressive, cutting chain...

    Best value in chainsaw files

My box of save edge files arrived. Fun fact: the box says Made in Portugal Processed in USA. Wonder if they’re made by Bahco.

    Best value in chainsaw files

Ended up buying a dozen save edge for $22.83 shipped from EBay. I don’t feel like that was a great deal by any means but better than my local option. Stihl files at $6.50 per 3 plus tax would end up being $27-$28 per dozen. The dozen I bought will last me quite some time. Anything else I can...

    Best value in chainsaw files

Good point about the coarse/fine thing....and something I haven’t considered. One thing about chainsaw files is the nomenclature seems way less standardized than other types of files. With other types of files, you can at least get TPI, maybe even Rockwell hardness. And if you have that info...

Best way for poor people to get a pole saw?

My HF “Lynxx” 40v pole saw has seen a lot of use (probably beyond its design limits) and I’ve been nothing but impressed. It could fall apart tomorrow and I wouldn't feel like it owed me anything. Not fast by any means. Some goofy stuff you have to learn to work around. But it’s light. It...

    Best value in chainsaw files

About to run out of sharp ones. Can only buy Stihl or Oregon locally and quite expensive compared to online. Not interested in gadgets, just want the best 7/32 files I can get for the money. Poking around on the interwebs, it seems that a lot of folks like Pferd or Vallorbe. I do like the...

    STIHL Progressive Depth Gauge Tool

Haven’t done much of anything with a chainsaw this summer. But my Dad’s sister lives in Cedar Rapids and we both went up there to help her with storm cleanup. 3 of the 4 chains I took along had rakers indexed with the Stihl gauge. The other was a new in box chain. I don’t attempt any sort...

    2-Stroke Mix Oil

RedBull660/ RedBull661 did a crap ton of research on this. You should be able to search for that thread. I read most/all of it, and since then have been using this: I mix it 40:1 with ethanol free gas and add some Strartron as well. FWIW, the Stihl platinum oil was one of the worst...

    33rs or 72LGX

(Premature conclusion based on limited data). I recently bought a couple loops of 75exl on eBay b/c the price was irresistible. I’d only run Stihl RS chain prior, not because I’m loyal to it, it’s just only thing I can buy in town. I thought it dulled pretty quickly cutting standing dead...

    STIHL Progressive Depth Gauge Tool

Got to try mine out on a chain I recently filed. I had already done the rakers with the progressive style Husqvarna gauge. This EU Stihl gauge is a little more aggressive on the hard setting the the Husq gauge. I think that’ll be a very good thing for the wood I cut, but haven’t cut yet to...

    Virus in China?

Thousands, and thousands of people have plain ole influenza in the US...right now. Lots of folks die from it every year. I wish the media could help us keep things in perspective rather than stoke up panic.

Gettin’ greedy - longer bar or larger sprocket?

does a larger oil pump rob a bit of power?

Gettin’ greedy - longer bar or larger sprocket?

I don’t supposed you’d have a part # handy? (Don’t go dig for it, just curious) Is the R model pump different than a regular 461? Edit: Looks like the HO pump might be 1128 640 3250

Gettin’ greedy - longer bar or larger sprocket?

    I want a strong 20” and a 24” I can live with when needed.

Gettin’ greedy - longer bar or larger sprocket?

Setting aside the 20” for the moment because it was in smaller wood. Interesting that 28” was kind of a “sweet spot”. The tip sticking out further clears the chips a bit quicker?
