    Wood Stove 500 Degrees??

Check out Condar Co. They have a great assortment of stove top and flue thermometers. The one you have is designed for external stove pipe readings. I like to monitor both stove top and internal flue temps, it gives me a better idea on whats going on. http://www.condar.com/woodstove_landing.html

    Getting more heat upstairs?

Maybe a small fan at the top of the stairs blowing the cool air down would help pull the warm air back up?

    soapstone woodstoves

I've been burning a Woodstock Fireview for over 4 years now and love it. Very easy to operate and achieve 10-12 hour burns with good dry hardwood. The heat is different than steel and iron, more steady and even without the searing heat spikes you get with steel/iron. Yes, soapstone takes a...

    Vermont woodstoves

I have heard from some other Dutchwest owners that they leave that combustor air control at about 1/4 to 1/2 and leave it there, then you control the heat output with the primary air control. It will take you some trial and error and the warmer weather can be tuff on fires at times. Do you have...

Finally Pulled in the Last Load of Wood

I think I've told my wife 3 times so far this year that this is my last load of wood but I keep running into more. I'm 3 years ahead and looking for more.

    burn temp

Most of those magnetic thermometers are designed to be read on the stove pipe. Your stove temp will get much higher than your stove pipe if you burn a EPA stove. I like to monitor both stove temp and pipe temps, it gives you a better idea what's going on.

    Cleaning stack on wood stove

I like to do it once midway through the season and also check everything else like the stove, pipe, and catalyst. Then I'll do a final sweep and inspection after the burn season is over. I usually get about a quart of light powdery soot each time. It doesn't hurt anything to do it more often.

    Covering wood piles...

A lot depends on moisture content. A piece of Oak at 15% moisture will burn better than a similar sized piece at 25% and also have more BTU's per pound.

    Who's still burning?

Barely got to 50 yesterday, so I fired up the stove last night to take the chill off. I can't ever remmember burning in June before, I guess it must be glowbull warming.

    locust .....is it good firewood?

I burned 3 cords of it last year. It takes a little extra air and time to get it going but once it does it burns great and lasts a long time.

    Covering wood piles...

I've tried everything, tarps, uncovered piles, covered stacks and Holz Hausens. The best thing I found is to get 2 or more years ahead on your firewood supply if you have the room and it will be dry no matter what. This year I built a wood shed with enough space to hold 2 years worth and now...

    Bur Oaks in Trouble

Actually it has been very dry here for the last year. The local weather man says we are in a severe drought, but I live next to a lake and have a sprinkler system so the trees should get plenty of water, unless too much of their root systems are under the road and driveway and don't get enough?

    Bur Oaks in Trouble

Our road was resurfaced 2 years ago, but the Oaks were getting bad before that. All the trees are close to the road and driveway, so maybe as they have gotten larger their root system gets more effected by this? I'll also check the cambium layer, thanks.

    What Is This Stuff?

I picked this up at the city recycle center and thought it was Silver Maple till I started splitting it. My little 8 ton splitter has a heck of a time and the rounds just sink into the wedge. It won't pop apart, I split a few small rounds and it almost tears apart like Elm. It's very light...
