Changing Bar Pitch on Stihl MS261

I have a ms261c the dealer swapped to 3/8” 0.050 20” ES Light and double up the felling spikes when I bought it. I wanted it for a number of reasons primarily because I’m in the PNW and others.

    Storm damage and chainsaws

I work with a tree service to collect wood. Walking past his Vermeer chipper at the last haul out I notice all the grease zerks had clean grease and bearings had a fresh ooze of lubricant. His crew also operates with sharp chains. Go figure.

Semi chisel vs chisel on longer bars

I have both types on hand. In the same wood, full chisel cuts quicker but semi chisel wins the race. I suppose a climber would want full and a groundy semi. Neither handle nails or metal very well. And keep both off the dirt.

Stihl should be ashamed of themselves.

There’s a design defect with the 462? Can someone explain what it is so I can check my saw for it?

    MS261 3/8 Rim

You’re welcome. Happy to share my setup. Just consider what you’re trying to do and what you’ll be cutting. The saw seems to be a real good one.

    MS261 3/8 Rim

I run a 3/8/.050 chain on a 20” bar on my MS261cm and it’s fine. Dealer switched rim drive, bar and chain. Credited the .325/.050 parts when I bought it. It would be set up with 3/8 if stihl still supplied regionaly specific models and setups. I have noodled 18” long rounds of big leaf maple...

Sold Brand New Stihl MS 462 R CM Full Wrap Handle Chainsaw, 28" Lightweight Bar, 4 Chains

Where did you find 25” oaks around here? The big difference is one is fuel injected and one is not. Other differences I do not think are significant.

Sold Brand New Stihl MS 462 R CM Full Wrap Handle Chainsaw, 28" Lightweight Bar, 4 Chains

Curious what this saw would or would not do for you around here. I bought this exact saw around here two years ago with exactly the same number of and model of chains and bar. What saw are you getting in lieu of the 462?

    What is a cord

NIST has the exact answer. A cord can be 4x4x8 feet. A cord must be 128 cubic feet. https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/pml/wmd/ncwm-firewood-facts.pdf

Just Purchased New Stihl MS462C 25" Light - Anything to consider before we get going?

Nothing. Oil it, fuel it, and cut with it. Great saw.

Chain selection for improved performance: 3/8 Low Profile options

Got my first real saw MS 362

33RMF92 loops are getting harder for me to find. But I definitely prefer RM over RS chain when bucking skidded logs. They are dirty and side by side RM was quicker overall for me.

    Husqvarna 261

I have a Husqvarna 261 And a Stihl 462. I love both. I bought the 261 new in 1999. It wears a 24” bar and full comp chain with no issues. They are good saws. Sorry about the lame buyer. If he acknowledged you when you said on the way then sold it before you got there, that’s really not ok.

Stihl 261 c serial number look up

Steve, what was the chain bar setup you went with? I’m getting a 261 soon and I’m fairly determined to put 3/8” pitch .050 gauge chain on it. I know what it takes to do it and have a dealer that will build. They just credit the stock b/c and ring and put what I want on it for additional retail.

    Bar size for MS462 ?

I have not used it yet on a wood pile or bucking. It is supposed to hold cutting edge better on dirty wood. Cutting performance starts out lower than RS profile but remains consistent longer and doesn’t fall off as fast. Either way it is quality chain so I have it In hand ready to try. Plenty of...
