    Cutting crooked

Is it cutting crooked only when you mill? As Alvareri stated above, it could be your mill. If it also cuts crooked when crosscutting, then it's probably uneven filing.

    Cutting crooked

to echo everyone else. “File.” I mainly sharpen for milling - which means I sharpen after about every 8-12 ft linear cut. Usually I just do about 3 file strokes for every cutter and a couple of strokes on the rakers every third sharpening. By the end of a full day, my tendency to take more off...

Need suggestions - Want a 48” chainsaw mill

Kinda hard to find a Grannerg 48 right now. Perhaps Covid related production issues. IDK. get the Granberg if you can better metal and machining. If not, get a Hilzfforma. It will last You through milling this one tree. They aren’t bad but they don’t match Granberg quality and longevity...

advice for next saw to add to my CS milling setup

I’m a Husky guy so I may be out of my element. The fact that 660 bars are not comparable with 880 mounts would be a bummer to me. I added a 3120 and all the bars and chains from my 390 work on both. An 880 will require investment in new bars and chains. Ugh. given that cost and flexibility...

    Questions on seasoning/drying milled wood

You should take the time to read this: https://www.wagnermeters.com/moisture-meters/wood-info/acceptable-moisture-levels-wood/ Wagner is, of course, trying to push their meters. but it's a solid peice on the issue and the professor they cite is a US (if not worldwide) re-knowned expert who has...

    Questions on seasoning/drying milled wood

Rule of thumb for air drying: one year for each inch to get it to relative humidity of your area. For my area, that’s about 14% . It’s fairly stable at that point but needs to be reduced further to about 9% for fine woodworking. for small pieces, JD is correct, an oven can be used but at very...

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

Good expenditure on Maloff! 3 ton floor jack from Harbor freight or Craigslist combined with can’t hook/peavy will help you maneuver and jack up logs. Elevation to cut down hill is better than a winch. have fun!

So, tell us what all you got. What you think you still need. Mill modifications. Cant hook? Lifting device like floor jack, etc.? Slab moving cart/devices? wedges? bar(s)? chains? Sharpening tools? I'm barely out of the "noobie" stage myself. It's interesting to watch someone else get set...

    Ripping 24"-36"L x 8"-14"D logs

Agree with Husky man. I use a Haddon "verticle mill" for ripping/edging rather than the G777. Lots of cheap clones all miles on the market, but I've heard the set screws on the Haddon clones don't seat/hold very well. Ripping chain is not mandatory unless you are worried about finish of the cut

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

Welcome to the club. How did the dave-worked Holzfforma run? Hope you get a solid, long life out of it - that will tell you whether you want to continue on with this pasttime. How's the budget looking? $1,000.00 spent yet?

Most common size to cut oak lumber for wood workers?

Build a cart for 8 to 12 footers. Wood scraps and 4 old kids bicycle wheels. you could cut your 3 footers 8/8 then rip to 8/8 on table saw then sell online to wood turners. Might check online for most popular sizes of turning blanks. Probably have to dry wood quite well before ripping.

    Granberg vs Skip

yeah, unstretched, new chains can kinda suck when milling. Generally speaking I try to get a few crosscuts on a chain for initial stretching before I run the chain in a mill. I start with a 30-35 degree skip chain; cross cut a bit. Then file it back 5 degrees in the shop. Cut some more, then...

    Granberg vs Skip

Yes, I meant rocking the saw back and forth when it is not cutting well - not rocking of the chain in the bar; which should not happen with a relatively tight chain and an undamaged bar

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

That's why I suggested that OP buy a bugged-out version from Dave. The reports of the engines are very good, but they have a reputation for small bugs out of the box. Check your oil/gas lines when new and then fairly regularly thereafter.

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

I don't have any experience with the Granberg mini mill. I use a Haddon lumbermaker for edging or field ripping. Most of my sellable cuts are live edge slabs. Edging the plith can help reduce a big log down to something small enough to go through the mill. Therefore, I sometimes edge the...

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

That's a bit of a tricky question. I have never used low-pro bars and chains. I've pretty much stuck with 3/8 .063 (though I.m going with 404 .063 on my new 3120xp.) It's easy to find decent deals on 3/8 bars and skip chains on fleabay. Just go with price and big volume/likes on Oregon stuff...

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

No, I wouldn't consider $1,000 a waste even if I turn out not like milling. A $500.00 chainsaw can have value down the road even if the resale value drops. A chainsaw has value after a hurricane, tornado, ice storm, beetle infestation, or just cleaning up at the lot/cabin at the river. Anybody...

Help me spend $1000 on freehand milling

It’s not about it bothering you now. I love the sound of a chainsaw. I loved AC/DC cranked up too. Quail/duck/deer hunted without ear protection. No problem - then. It’s about the cumulative damage to your ears when you reach my age.

    The $99 Poulan Pro

Been using one for about 5 years for limbing and lighter hurricane cleanup. Starts perfectly even after summer long no-cranks. Runs. Cuts. Can handle it all day. Has cut a couple of big bars out of bad bucking decisions. Never pushed it with a dull chain cause it takes only two minutes to...
