These followed me home today. No markings that I can see but someone has definitely put the larger hewing axe? in a vinegar bath or something. It is fairly pitted but I hope to bring it back to a usable state.

Finally hung a handle on the axe I started a month ago. Started with a fairly bulky factory handle that had nice grain and did a lot of slimming and shaping. Used red cedar for a wedge. Not as nice as a lot of the hanging’s I’ve seen on this thread but it’s my first attempt. I’ve already...

Found this at the scrap yard the other day.

Anyone running a bell firewood processor?

Sorry if I’m late to the party. I’ve been using a bell 6000 to put up a few hundred cord of firewood for the last few years. Overall quite happy and impressed with performance. I’d be more than happy to share anything I know about it.

Very nice! Do you know what type of hickory that is? Or what type is best for handles? I have a Bitternut hickory log about 15 feet long and 40” across that I cut down about 3 years ago. I have been thinking of milling it down for handle blanks as I’m experiencing the same lack of quality...

A quick google search suggests it W.GILPIN WEDGES MILLS. Made in the UK anywhere from 1834-1946

After a quick scrub with a wire brush I’m pretty sure it says W.GILPIN WEDGESMITHS. With a 1 stamped below. Anyone ever heard of that name?

This followed me home today. I can’t quite make out the name. I’ll have to clean out the stamp a bit

Definitely the funniest scenario I’ve heard! Thanks guys

    Axe restoration thread

Also jump started my collection rather aggressively at a local flea market this past weekend. Probably paid too much but I believe these are all quality heads. The splitting maul is a mystery to me. Looks brand new but obviously poorly mounted on a sledge hammer type handle. Wouldn’t it have...

    Axe restoration thread

Wow! How am I just now finding this thread? I started messing around with an old axe head I found at our hunting camp back in the winter and quickly became addicted. So far I’ve just dug out the remnants of the old handle and started cleaning up and resharpening it. Anyone know roughly how old...

Thanks BobL. I appreciate your experience and info. I am currently running .404 full chisel semi skip crosscut chain with a 7 pin on both bars as that is what is readily available in my area.(Ripping chain is hard to get and almost triple the price) however I have an 8 pin I haven’t tried yet...

Fairly new to milling. Love all the good info in this site. I’m running a Stihl 880 with a 40” bar in a 36” Granberg for the smaller logs and a 60” bar in a 72” Granberg for the bigger stuff. Saving up for a bigger bar or possibly a second power head to take full advantage of the bigger mill...

Thanks. M in the process of trying to find some info on it. I don’t think it’s had much use. Looks like it still has the original bar on it. The chain is on backwards for some reason

Picked these out of the scrap pile at the local dump. Both feel like they have decent compression.

Low compression on my new Stihl MS362

I can tell you not all 362 are bad saws. I have at least 60 hrs of run time on mine in the last couple months and it has been a real little powerhouse since brand new. Took about 8 or 9 tanks of fuel to get broken in and hasn’t missed a beat.

Low compression on my new Stihl MS362

Sorry. Just reread your last post and realized you already had a look at the rings.

Low compression on my new Stihl MS362

A camera through the plug hole doesn’t tell you whether you have a bad or missing ring on the piston. At this point you have nothing to lose by taking off the outer cover of the muffler. You don’t even need to take the whole muffler off. It is just a wide open box inside, no baffle or anything...
