    500i bar choice

All, I appreciate the detailed feedback. I've looked at the 661 CM as well and will give the 2 saws another look/comparison as well as give all your comments/experience some additional thought.

    500i bar choice

Friends, I manage (hobby farm) 16 wooded acres and am looking at adding a 500i with a couple of bars. I already have an MS 261CM with a 16” bar for smaller jobs. I’ve heard Stihl is moving away from the .063 gauge on the 3/8 pitch saws. Any confirmation on this? It’s a bit tough to find .063...

Advice on split trunk pine - appears healthy

arathol - I'll get another pic of the area but it sounds like I need to have it removed. jeff - thanks for the advice. I'm going to give it some thought. I'd really like to keep the tree but not in its present state. I'm not sure it would survive losing one of the trunks so I think total...

Advice on split trunk pine - appears healthy

Friends, The below pictured tree is fairly close to our home (currently being built). Should I consider having it taken down or reinforced due to the trunk split? I've read these trees can be problematic in high winds. Of note, this particular tree appears completely healthy at present...

Advice on Pine and Sweetgum - trunks too close?

I've done a bit of searching and reading on this and from what I gather I should remove the sweetgum and cut it back until it dies, then allowing the stump and roots to simply decompose. Any pros/cons of this approach?

Advice on Pine and Sweetgum - trunks too close?

Friends, I'm clearing some overdue fence at a family member's house and need advice on 2 trees. I have a very mature pine with a sweetgum growing immediately adjacent to the trunk. Should I remove the sweetgum? Sweetgum always grows back and I'm not sure on leaving the stump or trying to...

    MS250 revival & carburetor part #

Got it figured out. I took my sprocket in to the dealer and he said it didn't need replacement. Turns out I had done some cutting too close to the ground and gotten all manner of trash/debris/sawdust in my clutch assembly. The cage/needle bearing was destroyed and the worm was a bit damaged...

    MS250 revival & carburetor part #

Well, 1 tank of fuel and while the engine is running strong and idling great, unfortunately now the clutch sounds out of sorts (good bit of rattling even with a tight chain). After watching a few videos, I think it might be the needle cage bearing and sprocket. Will post back with an update...

hemostats for chainsaw repair or other use

lostone - thanks, using tape or heat shrink sounds like a good idea. I'll keep looking for a set of smooth jaws as well.

hemostats for chainsaw repair or other use

I realize this is an old post - but is this still solid advice (shaving off the hemostat teeth/serrations on the jaws)? I've been looking around for a set but have yet to find some with smooth jaws or at least some with jaws that are not heavily serrated.

    Hemostat recommendation

Friends, I'd like to get a few hemostats / locking forceps for chainsaw maintenance but have a couple of questions. Any particular model / set recommendations? Is it necessary to get the non-serrated grip models to avoid damaging hoses/lines? I read (on the forum) that someone suggested...

New land and new saw needed to replace MS 250 - MS 261 C-M?

Nathan, Thanks for the link - I'll check it out but it looks like they're still working on the Texas specific info.

New land and new saw needed to replace MS 250 - MS 261 C-M?

I appreciate all the replies and feedback. Just got the MS 250 running and will keep it as a backup. I think the 261 C-M with an 18" bar will be more than sufficient for 95%+ of what I'll be doing. That other 5% I can just contract out as needed or re-evaluate down the road as "CAD" progresses.

    MS250 revival & carburetor part #

Update - looks like it was the impulse line as the saw is now running decent. I'll put it through a few hour's work tomorrow for a full eval. Unfortunately, the local Stihl shop didn't have the correct size impulse line (the one they gave me to try out was too short at 1.5") but they said I...

New land and new saw needed to replace MS 250 - MS 261 C-M?

I clarified my original post a bit. The 1-2 weeks per year use was when I was on active duty and using the saw at my mother-in-law's place during brief visits for clearing fence line & problem trees. Now, I'll have to maintain both my 16 acres & the other 2 acre property. Overall, the saw...

DND 9000, Thanks for clearing up the carb info. Here's the current model which I just installed: S76G carburetor / Stihl part # 1123 120 0603 (purchased locally from an authorized Stihl dealer).
