Keeping large trees to a manageable size

Are you really sure you don't want to try a nice dwarf alberta spruce?

Keeping large trees to a manageable size

We usually talk about planting the right tree in the right place. You are talking about the opposite of that. There is a possibility that a chemical Tree Growth Regulator (e.g. paclobutrazol) could help you, but you would have to keep it up for many years. I can't say if it would be worth it...

    Problem with standby generator

Running the generator frequently is an important part of having it ready to run, not just to keep the battery charged.

    Plasma Cutters

A "double 50" breaker lets you draw 50 amps at 240-ish volts. Check the docs on the 65-amp plasma, it probably doesn't need more than 50 amps of input current, but probably has 65 amps output current (implying lower output voltage than input).

Oh ****, I thought this was going to be about Tomahawk Cruise Missile targets...

    Stump killer?

Perhaps there is a climate where KNO3 works great on stumps, but my experience is that it kills any fungus that would be rotting the stump, and leaves hard stump wood for a long time. I started with greenhouse grade potassium nitrate, so maybe it was too pure, or something.

    Intertwined trees in Costa Rica.

From the photos I would say probably not. If it is going to hang up right away then it will not likely be very directable with a rope. If you conclude differently, and you have someone you trust to be the rope man, then by all means try it.

    Intertwined trees in Costa Rica.

Is it possible to cut the smallest one in the direction of it's lean (it will hang up), and then pull it out in the opposite direction by its base (using a winch or tractor, even a come-along if there is no other option)? I'm sure that would not be easy, or quick, but it should be pretty safe...

    Toughest trees to climb

There are still many places that bucket trucks can't go.

    Padded Gloves Recomendations?

I don't have a product recommendation, but there is an ANSI/ISO standard for vibration resistant gloves: https://wwwn.cdc.gov/PPEInfo/Standards/Info/ISO108192013 I suggest that you look for products that actually comply with these standards. E.g. google for "vibration gloves 10819".

Serious termite problem in Sycamore tree

I would remove the tree and plant something from another genus. Do your homework.

Is This the Emerald Ash Borer?

Some researchers say that there are secondary hosts (e.g. Chionanthus), but it is unclear if these alternative hosts could sustain a significant population. They might just die out in an area if Fraxinus became unavailable.

What are your favorite felling wedges and why?

Most of the trees I have been felling are small-ish (12-18" DBH), so I find the Oregon 5.5" wedges work better than the longer wedges (it sucks to bottom your wedge on the holding wood before getting enough lift). I would like to try some 10" wedges with 2" of lift rather than needing to double...

Wrong Mix Ration of Gas/Oil for 2-cycle engine - New Craftsman Chain Saw

Speed limit signs in my area have been changed under cover of darkness to cubits per fortnight. Local law enforcement was not amused. BTW - 35 mph is approximately 41.4 million cubits per fortnight.

When to fell an ash… now or spring?

Some last for years after the crown looks dead. But most become dangerous sooner than that. I have had several ash trees snap 6 to 15 feet up in wind storms.

When to fell an ash… now or spring?

Unless you actually see the adult emerald ash borers, crown thinning is often the first sign that your trees are infested. I am dropping/cleaning up trees on any day that I am available and it is safe to do so (i.e. not so windy that dropping branches are a hazard, and not so icy that safe...

Wrong Mix Ration of Gas/Oil for 2-cycle engine - New Craftsman Chain Saw

Just use the same oil, but mix in 3.2 oz of the 2-stroke oil per gallon.

Wrong Mix Ration of Gas/Oil for 2-cycle engine - New Craftsman Chain Saw

So the mix you made is about 1:65 If there is a purge bulb on the saw then I would fill it with the right mix and pump that purge bulb for a while to mix the bad ratio with the good stuff before trying to start it.

Someone started cutting a tree down for us and hasn't finished the job

I assume that the guy who walked away from this has poor judgement (perhaps a drug or alcohol problem), and has nothing to lose in a lawsuit. He already got the money, so he just doesn't care.
