    Split-Fire log splitters

I have a 2260 thats about 8 years old now. I believe one change to the 2265 was the cylinder is slightly larger diameter. Mine does the 24" stroke in 4 seconds. Id suspect the larger cylinder would be sligjtly slower. I never had an issue with power, but the wood up here is not as knarly as...

Looking for a true firewood conveyor. Opinions wanted

I had a V trough chain type and now a belt. The only way the belt has jammed is a stick roughly the same width as the sides will wedge itself as it goes up (rarely) or a piece will jam in my homemade trash rack. I've yet to tighten the belt after a couple years. The chain conveyor was...

    Dump trailer

I have a 6x10, with high side boards. It holds a cord of loose wood. Stacking it in takes time and handling. I can wiggle that trailer close enough for most people, the rest can use a wheelbarrow. When it's not a living,it's easy to say no, or too bad to people. Check out the DOT rules in your...

Anyone using bulk (1/3rd cord) firewood bags?

I've been through this thought loop a while too..... Almost decided to conveyor into big pile on ground, and buy a rock/manure/skeleton type bucket for the tractor and turn the pile every so often. What's easier is to just cut/coveyor right into the trailer and deliver it. I just tell people to...

A hydraulic ram pulls as hard as it pushes

I have a Splitfire wood splitter. The smallest gas powered one... the nastiest wood we have here is White Birch, which can be pretty stringy. I've yet to have a piece it wouldn't split. This unit is 10 years old, and the newer version has a slightly larger cylinder I believe making it a bit...

    Time for a new bar?

That bar needs some TLC. The edges are rolled over. File it smooth. Do ypu have a belt sander? Try to file/sand the 'top' of the rails flat..... ie. 90⁰ to the sides. Its probably worth your time to spend $80 on a new bar that will last you the rest of your cutting lifetime.

    Time for a new bar?

Having a spare bar on hand is never a bad idea, so go buy one and try. I had a very similar issue with my processor, and thought it was my hand sharpening. Nope. A chain i thought was junk was just fine in the new bar. I get ~150 cords on a bar, so dont worry about saving $20 on one...

    Off-saw bar tensioner for sharpening

I use a bungee cord to tension a chain on a bar clamped in the vice, for off the saw sharpning. I have a few screws in my bench leg to hook the bungee to....its that simple and works fine enough for me

    50 cc Firewood saw opinion

Ive been running a Husky 353 since 2005. I recently damaged it and looked at a 550xp but have found parts to fix the 353 thankfully! Ive cut 100's of cords with the 353, cleared lots of trail, its been a great sized saw. Most of our wood can be cut with a 16-18" bar....

Bar n chain oil now $22/gal at Ace

Almost all year.... i quit about this time and wait till the snow goes away. I dont do much below -20⁰c/-5f. Canola is about $10-12/gal here at the grocery store. Im sure bulk some where could be less but im in the boonies and dont get to the city very often and any freight usually negates...

Bar n chain oil now $22/gal at Ace

While not a milling application, ive been running canola in my firewood processor for a while now. About 100 cords on the 18" bar with Canola and its about the same wear as with bar oil. I get ~150 cords per bar, i run the chain slightly tighter than on a saw. Canola wasnt much cheaper...

    Burning conifers

Our only hardwood in this area is White Birch. Or Poplar/Aspen if you want to consider it a hardwood...... so we burn alot of Conifer. We have Jack Pine and Spruce (white and black) Tamarack is also around. Soft wood can only be harvested dead standing for fuelwood. Most land around here is...

... suggested the logs should be 19" long with a 9" split.

Sounds like a great person to tell ‘sorry I’m sold out’ 19” is the east part with a processor, but unless you know they’ll be happy, is it worth hearing them bellyache? Or maybe some education to them that ‘most any size that’s dry will burn just fine’. Sounds like The previous owner used...

Stewing on speeding up box store splitter

You could take your cylinder to a machine shop and have bigger ports put on (3/4) and a larger rod. Maybe see about finding a larger rod/cylinder at a junk yard on an old machine…. May be cheaper to have the shop use old rod material if it’s in good shape. I put a larger rod in a 3”...

    Check Out This Machine

https://halversonwoodproducts.com/ Neat idea, if you owned the skid steer to power it. Like anything, there are pros and cons to each machine! Running a 50-80hp+ engine to make firewood at even 2-3 cords/hr is a lot of fuel and machine time. But in an A/C cab with the radio going, it sure...

How do logs "go bad" while sitting?

Depends on species too…… Birch will rot in a few years. The bark is like Saran Wrap.

What chainsaw bar in your opinion is the longest lasting ?

I get ~150 cords of firewood out of Oregon bars. Same as Husquvarna bars. My processor runs a Husky mount so I’ve yet to try a Sthil bar. I can’t imagine anything else lasting any longer at a price point that makes it worth it. (For this application at least) I usually replace them cause I...

    Splitting multiple rounds at once?

If cost or a good junk supply for parts is not a problem, I’d say have at’er! But by the time you remount a long cylinder or rework your wedge, buy new hoses… Like woodchuck, I use a 4 way wedge and adjust it ‘up’ and can run 4 smaller rounds through it, 1/2’ing them. The woods sits in a V...

Hydraulic Splitter Cylinder Port and Rod Size

Any local machine shop or hydraulics shop should be able to modify a cylinder for you. I had my off the shelf cylinder ‘upgraded’ with larger ports and a larger rod. If you’re worried about $, find a new hobby! I think the machine shop bill was about the same as the cylinder, or more. I...
