    Oak vs pine,fir what's

    I burn whatever I can score for free off of Craigslist. I like Pine for the quick temp. rise you get from starting. I think the ideal for my area is a mix of pine and oak/almond (but good luck finding the latter for free).

    Pine is my go to wood for the woodstove. 80%+ of what I burn is pine. Don't just relegate it to the firepit. Use it at startup to get your room up to temp in short order.

    Your "pine" sound like spruce based on your description. Very pungent aroma. It will lighten quike a bit, but will put out the heat for an intense but short period of time.

    the problem with this is your homeowners insurance company isn't going to help you much if you ever have a structure fire (unless you get the type that snap shut during a fire)

    I'm on a 6000 sq ft lot in the 'burbs where houses have ~10 feet of separation. Scrounge ALL my wood from CL (mostly city pine)

    I don't burn 24/7, and find that not emptying the ashpan causes the stove to put out less heat.
