    I Got Da' Boot(s)

I sell many pairs for the Matterhorns boots and the ONLY complaint I've had is they are "hard". A good pair of Dr. Shcholls does the trick. I don't work in the woods every day, but have been wearing the same pair for well over three years. Still waterproof and still comfortable. Overall, the...

Newbie with Stihl MS029 repair issues

Be prepared to take every last thing apart on the saw to replace the P&C. It's worth doing if you are going to do the work yourself, but it's over two hours of labor, and when done by a shop, would cost you almost as much as a new saw.

    Husky 359 vs. Dolmakita 6401

Husky 359 - 3.9 HP, 12.1 lbs. Dolmar 6400 - 4.8 HP, 13.6 lbs. The Dolmar has almost 20% more power for roughly 10% more weight. It also has 4 times the warranty of the husky when used for commercial cutting. What kind of warranty are you going to get on a modded 359??

    Breaking bars

They are called felling levers. They are placed in the kerf of the back cut when felling and lifted to help get the tree tipped. They are many times used in place of a wedge, but are only effective on smaller diameter (up to 20" DBH) trees that don't have a significant back lean.

    Idling saws

Highly unlikely. Even while idling, the fan is still moving air past he cooling fins.

Play in the drum of a 6401

You have a rim sprocket, so the thickness of the washers, no matter where you put them, is not going to make that much difference. The rim floats on the clutch drum. I realize that the IPL shows the washer on the outside of the clutch drum, but I will sometimes put it on the inside IF the drum...

Play in the drum of a 6401

Were you moving the chain back and forth along the bar when you heard the ringing? If so, it was probably the oil pump drive hitting the ears on the clutch drum. This is normal.

Play in the drum of a 6401

I'm still unclear as the exact part you are talking about. Using the following address, http://www.dolmarpowerproducts.com/files/downloads/166/source.pdf, could you identify the reference number of the part you are talking about? Then I can better advise you on what the problem/solution might...

Play in the drum of a 6401

Play in the clutch drum would indicate that the bearing is bad. Remove the clutch drum and inspect the bearing. It may need to be replaced.

    Grease It?

It's a toss. There are so many variables that can affect how long a bar nose sprocket is going to last. What I tell my customers is, if you are going to grease, grease it every tank or two. Otherwise, don't grease it at all. The reasoning behind this: while cutting, the grease can attract...

    Newbie Question about Bow Saws

Bow bars are mainly used in regions where pulpwood cutters operate. The idea is that for smaller diameter logs, the open center allows you to buck without having to worry as much about pinching the bar. As you are cutting through, the wood can pinch together but because the center of the bar...

    Bar & Chain Recommendations

18" bar with 3/8" chain would be a good combination. 20" is a bit large, but as long as you are not using all 20" all the time, it will be fine.

    Mini Steam cleaner or washer?

I bought one of the Monster 1200 steam cleaners off the TV last year and used it once. It did not work like I thought it would, because the pressure is not high enough. I still use either an ultrasonic cleaner (for parts) or the good ol' parts washer for degreasing. I have used a hot water...

    files?

This is Oregon's view on square filing. http://www.oregonchain.com/tech/ms_manual/ms_06.pdf This is Madsen's http://www.madsens1.com/bnc%20filing%20cb.htm

"Sharpen cutters on one side first"

Are you filing into or out of the cutter? If the bar is pointed towards your chest, and are pushing the file, you would be filing into the cutter. This is the less desirable way to file. To file this way correctly, you would have to turn the file handle away from you and pull the file towards...

Who's Good at Grinding Square Chisel Chain?

Most events around here are held in Boonville, NY at the Woodsman's Field Days in August. If you log onto the GOL website, the locations of upcoming events is posted. I doubt that the 2009 events are posted yet though.

Who's Good at Grinding Square Chisel Chain?

If you round file (or grind) the chain back to good chrome, it is easy to re-square file it. I routinely cut in GOL competitions and part of it is filing a dulled chain, not only for speed, but also for control. The judges take a brand new Oregon CK chain out of the box and run a nice coarse...

    Dolmar 7900w

I have well over 100 out in the hands of commercial users right now, and have not had any major complaints about the air filters. The only thing that some customers have commented on is the slight trace of fine dust in the throat of the filter, but as of yet, I have not seen a 7900 failure due...

help with piston ring end gap direction

Ring ends should be pinned over the intake port. There should be a mark on the head of the piston that would point toward the exhaust port or mag side depending on manufacturer.
