    Older Bandit Autofeed help

The auto feed doesn’t do anything. I have to control the feed wheels with the bar, so I can’t machine load it unless I have a helper. At least not on bigger stuff that will overwhelm it.

That would be great. I’ll shoot you a PM.

    Older Bandit Autofeed help

It just stops infeeding (flow stop solenoid in-line to the feedwheel supply), but doesn’t retract. Not ideal, but better than just shoving material in until it stalls.

    Older Bandit Autofeed help

This is a simple old auto feed that just stops the feed, it doesn’t reverse. The SS100 should be capable of that just by powering the solenoid when the RPM drops below the set point, and deenergizing when above the set point, correct?

    Older Bandit Autofeed help

Mine has a Datcon analog tach, but the Murphy SS100 appears to be getting a signal from the wires coming off the tach. From the general area of the tach, it is recieving battery -, ignition switched battery +, and what I assumed was a tach/input signal. Most of those likely were switch out to...

    Older Bandit Autofeed help

I actually did contact Bandit. I got a manual for it from them a couple years ago, but the autofeed documentation was for a newer version, and not at all helpful. I requested a wiring diagram for the one I have, and they forwarded my email to someone else, but I haven't heard back and it's...

    Older Bandit Autofeed help

I have a 1996ish Bandit HD280XP and I'm trying to decipher the autofeed and get it working. I replaced the wiring from the box to the solenoid, and from the box to the tach and ignition. The solenoid functions properly when 12v is put on it, and the box has an on/off switch which is working...

    MS660 scored piston advice

Another wrinkle, decided to measure the piston/cylinder. Already 56mm, so it has a big bore kit in there. But the cylinder has a 54 in the number, which I would think would indicate 54mm diameter. Who knows? I think the smart solution is to rejug it. This good deal is gonna get real expensive, haha.

    MS660 scored piston advice

Here's some pics of the piston and cylinder. I noticed the cylinder does not have any Stihl markings on it. It does have 54ZN12 on it. Not sure if that's good, bad, or neutral. I tried lightly sanding it with oiled up 500 grit, and it cleaned up 60-70% of the affected area, but not the worst...

    MS660 scored piston advice

I wouldn't, but they all said "BEST" on the box ;) That's why I'm relying on the collective wisdom here to sort through what's good and what's not, and also to help ensure that I send it off to get it ported because every saw needs to be :D

I'll get some pics tonight or tomorrow. If I remember correctly, it's scored pretty badly.

    MS660 scored piston advice

Looks like a Meteor piston kit is $50 and piston/cylinder kit is $130. https://www.hlsproparts.com/searchresults.asp?Search=ms660+meteor But it sounds like the primary reason to save the cylinder is that the Stihl stuff is the best option, which I'm good with that logic.

    MS660 scored piston advice

Correct, which is why I asked: Is OEM the only way to go for that stuff, or is there a high quality aftermarket version that doesn't have the Stihl markup?

    MS660 scored piston advice

046 is in the 160psi range. Friend I got the saw from also tested the 660 at 110psi with his gauge. My background is engineering, machining, and metrology, so to see two different brands of testers within a couple psi makes me feel pretty good about it.

    MS660 scored piston advice

I did the "half-ass" version of this yesterday. Shot some WD40 in there. Didn't seem to help. I'll try it again with the heavier pre-mix oil. I guess the main crux of my question is whether or not low compression would cause it to not run. I would certainly think so if it were like 30psi...

    MS660 scored piston advice

As far as I can tell, a piston is $50, and whole new top end is about $100. It's worth $50 to me to not have to take it apart again and risk ruining a brand new piston. In my younger days when I was a cheap bastige with time to burn, I would pull it apart and clean everything up and try to...

    MS660 scored piston advice

I recently acquired a non-running MS660 from a friend. I was there when it died. He was finishing the back cut on a 50" oak trunk that we were dropping, and it just stopped mid cut and wouldn't recrank. I finished the cut with my trusty old 046. I know the gas he was running was properly...

    Stihl 046 Magnum Questions/Thoughts/Info

10 year old thread bump? But at least now I know how long I've had my 046. Still slinging chips like a boss.
