    CCW while firewooding?

Guess I now know where I'll be headed when the SHTF down here in the lower 48. I'll be the most well armed son of a bi**h in the valley.

Changing from 18 in. bar to a 16/14 in. bar? 42cc engine

I used to run a couple of Craftsmans. I moved one to a 14" bar and the saw was much happier. If the saw hasn't given you any problems and you use it that much, might as well keep it as a second saw. Plus it is probably about time for a new bar anyway.

    Persistence Pays

Good score. Make sure you take care of the landowner and let them know you really do appreciate it. One word of caution however, make sure you take with you whatever you cut on any given day. Never know when a landowner might decide that cut wood is worth money.

    is bigger better?

I like to run a 12" on my 180. Makes for a zippy little limbing saw. Once the branches get above 10" its time for a larger saw anyway. Next step up is an 18" on either the 310 or 044. I keep a 24" bar in the truck for the 044. I don't run it often because I like to maximize the power with...

I think I'm over the CAD...

Also have CAD in remission. I'm just finishing up my 6th season burning wood. When I started I was a wood scrounger with a hand me down Craftsman from my FIL. Now in 6 years, I have bought (for the pursuit of firewood): 1. All of the saws on my sig plus a Dolmar 5100 that has since been...

    what's up with some people?

Did they leave the trunks or take them and leave the mess of the tops? If the trunks are still there, it sounds like a great wood score especially with the farmer supplying some of the equipment.

    CAD is history

I also think that I have my CAD in check. I still come here nearly every day but I don't think about chainsaws anywhere near like I did a year ago. I've got 3 good running Stihls and they will take care of anything on my property that needs cutting. Unfortunately, to get rid of the CAD I...

    044 with a 16" BAR?

I've got an 18" on my ported 044. I had a bunch of chains for the 310 that I bought earlier with an 18". Didn't want to buy a bunch more chains to run a 20" on the 044. I also have a 24" for the larger wood. Cutting with the 18" on the 044 is fun. Tons of power and you keep a little of...

    Top down burning

From a cold stove, you put your wood in and start the fire on the top instead of the bottom. This obviously does not work if you have a bed of coals in the bottom. I use it all of the time. What it does for you is starts your fire with less smoke. Less cool smoke means less creosote in the...

    Best gloves for longevity?

I quit paying for the good heavy leather gloves a couple years ago. Got tired of seeing holes in them after just a couple days. Went to buying the rubber front/knit back gloves from Harbor Freight. They have them on sale for $1.49 and I can usually get several firewooding days out of a pair...

Any idea's what happened to my furnace last night?

Sounds like gasses loaded up in the burn box and when you introduced fresh air to it, you set off a reaction and it flash burned the gasses. I know alot of people with OWBs recommend cracking open the door for a few seconds rather than just flinging it open. Long slow burns seems to cause this.

    Should I sell my MS310

Let me start by saying that I love my MS310. Starts easy, runs great and alot of power after I modded the muffler. Here's what leads me to ask this question. I also have an 044 that wears an 18" bar, same as the 310. While the 044 is heavier, it is also faster. It runs great and starts...

Can I have the first infraction penalty

If you don't like the wide borders, set you screen size at the bottom right corner to 113%. You'll have to go to the custom settings to do it on Internet Explorer.

For the wood burner who has everything

I want to be the guy who gets to sell the guy who can afford that stove the wood to feed it. Skies the limit on quality wood pricing.

    Wood ID please

It's not cottonwood. I have cut and split live cottonwood in the past and this is not it. There was no water at the ram when the wedge entered the wood. Split kind of like elm due to the stringy quality of the wood and it held together. The bark was real heavy at the base of the tree and got...

    Wood ID please

Hydraulic. 21 ton that split right through most of the straight grained stuff easily. This piece had a branch off of it. The wood doesn't even seem wet. I threw one nasty split on the fire tonight and it didn't hiss or water at all. Just caught fire and burned.

Would I be Crazy to Trade?

It would be hard to trade down power. But if you've only had the need to run a 32" on your 660 twice a 044/440 will do that for you easily.

    Wood ID please

What have I got here? Had to take this down to get the entangled American Elm down. This tree will come in right about 1 cord and had about a 20" trunk. Fell it right into the field yesterday. Gave the 044 a real nice workout. <a...

    Which caliper to buy?

SPI actually makes a decent caliper. If you don't want to spend the money on Starrett, Browne & Sharpe or Mititoyo go get a SPI. If you need it daily and you need it right everytime, spend the extra money.
