Wood Ash and the wife, I am so in the dog house.....

Do a search on something called an "ash trap" shovel. If you can transport the ash outside before dumping it in a can then you might be home free. Alternatively, maybe use a tiny shovel and coffee can and do all of the work completely inside of the stove? Then you could dump the coffee can...

    No Draft and 0 outside

If it's a low pitch roof that you could comfortably walk around on in the rain, then plug a long garden hose onto a nearby spigot (preferably hot water) and hose down a wide path to your chimney. For as short a time as you're going to be up there it shouldn't ice back up before you have to get...

    Shake and Rake insulation.

Searching shake and rake reveals that it's just loose fill fiberglass. What a pita that will be. Dinger, when I moved in my 1000 sq ft house fifteen years ago and was much more ambitious, I pushed 38 bags of the cellulose crap through a 2x2 attic access above a closet shelf, crawled up there...

Looking for Chainsawing Classes or Lessons.

I'll hazard a guess that the husqvarna is a 350. Lots of different models came with 18" bars but the only "nascar edition" I'm aware of is the 350 model that they sold at Lowe's a few years ago. The husqvarna owner's manual will likewise contain a tutorial and lots of safety information. You...

    How to take it down?

I don't think you should mess around with come-a-longs and the such, those paper birch in the background look pretty spindly and generally too much can go wrong. It really doesn't want to go that way. If you wind up taking the fence down and falling it, treat it like it's going to explode as...

Wood drying questions from a new guy

Well CWME, as long as this thread is back from March can you report on how the red oak is burning for you? I suspect you've burned a few so far this fall...

Any tricks to getting a longer burn time?

I used to battle this when I had a little Jotul F100 QT. The unsplit round and the green wood thing never worked - they would usually be 1/2 burnt and cold in a dead fireplace in the morning. The closest thing that I found were well-seasoned knots or blocks. If you process your own firewood...

    Water in Logsplitter Engine Tank

I think that's a splendid idea since the bugger is so persistent. Maybe tie cowbells all over the place, too. The idea is to slow him down and force the kid to make noise - you want that little beast to decide on his own that it's not fun, exciting or worth it. If you photograph and confront...

Firing up EPA woodstove for the first time tonight, any suggestions

It never gets old, does it. "Hey, don't you get tired of tinkering with that stove all of the time?" "NOPE!"

    I bought my dream truck

What a handsome piece of equipment! It isn't a mistake, you'll probably giggle every time you dump a load and curse when you have to repack wheel bearings or fix the choke, that's the charm of those old things. It's nice enough to wash and wax once a summer when you're feeling ambitious but...

    Transporting your saw

Wow, you guys take good care of your saws. Mine just get thrown in the pickup box with a bar scabbard. If I'm going to leave a saw unattended I padlock it to a tiedown in the box with a 3/8" chain.

    I hate the EAB!!

"I'm BAD Ash" "And you're GOOD Ash" Bummer man. I miss ash trees. I wonder if that EAB parasite thing that they released to control it is doing anything. There are a few trees around here that seem to be coming around - but is the EAB is even here in metro detroit anymore? Don't...

More wood in a pickup bed, split or unsplit?

GREAT SCOTT! Excellent work Curlycherry, I am a doubter no more. You have tested the practical worst case, thank you.

More wood in a pickup bed, split or unsplit?

This thread is a riot! Curly's scale mockup makes me think of the professor in Back to the future: "forgive the crudity of this model, I didn't have time to build it to scale or to paint it" Curly if you still have the setup can you please try it again only with two 4" diameter dowels? I...

Darn it! I must do this nine times out of ten!!

The inside of the oil tank must be shaped like an upside-down funnel. No matter how much I think I'm going to get it right *THIS* time that last little bit comes up super quick and BLORP over the top. What finally got my percentage from 9/10 down to 8/10 was to remember that it's designed to...

    Fire rings&indoor wood storage

If your stove is small like my F100 you can use an ash bucket to haul in a couple loads. The black one in the photo only cost me $1 as a scratch-and-dent at Target.

    Maul ID

Hmph! Guess I must have been scrawnier than I thought as a teenager then. I saw you had a pile of split wood in the photos, was just wondering if you preferred that maul or if it was the only one you had. Sounds like it's your new favorite. I'll have to pick one up if I find it somewhere. You...

    I blame you lot!!!

I shamelessly burned last night even though it wasn't that cold... mainly so the dog could have a pleasant evening nap. My neighbor commented on it (positive, wishing she had a stove too) today. If nothing else sdt, you have to test this year's firewood!

    Disposing of pine trunks

Season it, mix it in with some hardwood and burn it. Try to pretend it's hickory if it makes you feel better about it.
