How do I get into EAB Treatment/Prevention?

Hi all. EAB has hit Minneasota and suprised me and many others. I've been asked to treat un infected ash trees to prevent infestation. I've read about Xytect mostly and it looks like a good place to start. Questions: Xytect 2F or 75WSP? Can I rig a lawn spray rig 300 gallon for soil...

    cottonwood

I always figure what it SHOULD go for, dreaming of course. Then figure what everybody else is gonna be bid. Then bid it as low as I can without hating myself, taking in all the factors; obstacles, hauling, difficulty, can the bucket reach all of it, etc. There's a price to bid it and a price...

    cottonwood

It's a big a$$ tree, with the new deck under. In the summer I would have thrown 2400 at it. I've done bigger for 2200 with stump, oops. Winter rates, I bet it went for 1800 with stump and clean up. So what did you do it for? Don't be embarrassed if it was lower at least you had something to do!

Watch out for these crooks! ################

Leads services suck. I payed them way too much money in the past. Service magic is worst. Tree Service Direct wasn't too bad but I don't see them on the searches anymore. Are they gone?

    Where to find a foreman?

I've never got anybody good out of craigslist. Try newspapers and word of mouth. Referals from friends is best.

    olathe 330 chipper

I've got an Olathe 986 disc with a Ford 4 cyl diesel. Bought it for 5000 a couple years ago and haven't put anything on it but knives, battery and an alternator. Looks like hell but people are always amazed when we run it. Feeds brush great and loves log 10-12" softwood easily. Loves cottonwood...

    Arborist Certification for everyone

I agree, the arborist cert is really not that hard. Was more of a hassle to drive to the testing location. I did learn alot and it caused me to go on and learn more about trees and how to do it right but with many cities moving toward required certification to obtain licenses most just want the...

Source for 2" Auger for verticle mulching

Thanks TreeVet. Keep your eyes peeled or ask someone if you get a chance. I know I've seen them somewhere but I can't find now. That verticle mulching is a lot more work than I thought it was going to be. Hard on the back, used quite a lot of material. The tree I did was a 20" or so ash...

Getting a handle on bidding with the big boys

Also it may not be as steady as we think. A local truck repair shop that works on a small utility tree service's trucks was told by the tree guys that the utilities had no more money/work and they were heading home mid summer. Not trying to pick on you ROPE just had some points relating to...

Getting a handle on bidding with the big boys

There is a small tree service here in Mineapolis, MN that now works for the local utility. They have 2 buckets, 1 chip truck and chippers and a bobcat from what I have seen. They seemed to have partnered with the utility as the utility help sell tree work on their website...

    6 cable maple

That's what most Norway Maples end up looking like around here, crap. She's in rough shape that's for sure. Most would have cut it down. If it wasn't near any buildings nice job getting some work out of it. You can cut it down later. It's amazing it was still standing. Wouldn't have taken much...

    Everycontracter.com

I used lead companies in the beginning. They are way too expensive and most leads are duds. I fired em all this spring. But now I'm sitting here on the internet. I'd rather sit than pay 20 bucks for somebody's address that is thinking about trimming a branch. DON"T USE THEM!!! THE REFERAL...

Source for 2" Auger for verticle mulching

Earlier this summer I bought a Stihl gas drill with hand chuck and a 2" auger form my local dealer to do occasional verticle mulching. The drill is good but the auger they gave me SUCKS. It's poorly built, soft, actually a bulb drill for planting. Could hardly get through one job and bit is...

Getting a handle on bidding with the big boys

I was browsing a local electric utitity's website yesterday. It said they spent 3 million last year on tree trimming and cleared x miles of line at an average of 2,800 per mile. That's all I have found. I too am interested in ROW clearing for reliable work and the privilage of working with...

Australians - Watch Current Affair Friday 7 November 2008

This look interesting! So I take it that tree service is accused of scaring old people into taking their trees down. We get that around here too. Guys in pickup trucks and other tree services drive into the city from far away and go door knocking. They tell old ladys their big nice oak is...
