2:40 am awakened to a house full of smoke

It was pretty windy in the north/east the past few nights and was most likely just more pressure at the top of the chimney than in the house. My stove was "puffing" smoke into the house a few days ago due to the 40 mph winds outside. I just ran it a bit more open, still "puffed" once in a...

What is in your chainsaw tool box?

pretty much everything listed above plus some jerky, something chocolate, empty coffee cups & registration . . . my "tool-box" is my '89 Toyota pickup and I can usually get it within 40 (or so) yards of what I'm cutting. I also keep the peavy & Fiskars splitter, extra T-shirt and socks behind...

How do I cut the rest of this tree up?

To make it easier to remove the stump, don't let it flip back upright! Tie it off to a truck or nearby tree so it can't fall back, then cut it off clean keeping all your body parts out-of-line with the bar & chain. Once you have the bulk separated from the root, use a pressure washer to...

    Help with white pines

Looks like BB gun damage, or Bear or Bobcat clawings. Could be woodpeckers too. Something is damaging the bark but your pics don't show what...

    Whatta mess!

Harry, are you knocking down the rakers on those chains??? That usually lets the saw pull itself into the log, no pressure needed. Nice job, lots of work, too!!!

    JD 440A Skidder Weight ?

GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT is all Maine D.O.T. cares about and if you're over your registered weight and get busted, you'll be paying a whole lot more in fines than to hire someone with a big truck & trailer. Your biggest challenge is not whether you can tow it but whether you can stop it!!!:jawdrop...

    Chain and bar replacement

I'm with him^^^. If you have a dealer nearby get the little "pocket guide" on Stihl bars & chains, how to sharpen them and when to replace them. Should be free!

    Stihl Saw Identification Anyone?

If you decide to buy a new saw, remember that the old one is worth a few bucks for the parts! A new tank assembly alone is $136, used can bring $50+. Search Stihl 029 on ebay for a complete list! Oh, and I do have a very good used Stihl MS-310 for sale with it's original box and owners manual...

    "Thermal mass" - Storing heat...

If you look into it more you'll also find the original "thermal mass" was the russian fireplace consisting of a huge mass of rock built around a firebox with chimney sliders. They would burn a screaming hot fire for several hours, reload the fire box then close down the chimney sliders forcing...

    David Bradly Saw

I found a David Bradly saw that appears to be 'gear or chain drive'. I don't know how complete it is but if someone here is interested you can call 207-333-8982 and ask for Ben for any questions. He was selling a bunch of stuff when I noticed the saw under a bench, he did say it was for sale...

Better Show than Ax-Men / Hist. Chan.

I liked the logging and saws shows better than ax-men too. The ax-men show looks more like 'created drama' and is trying to be like 'deadliest catch' but doesn't come close to the original shows. Looks to me like having cameras on a logging site would encourage [some] people to show of...

    how to build a supersplit?

""it looks inherently dangerous! "" Duh!!! And a chainsaw, with it's bar & chain fully exposed to bite your face off doesn't look inherently dangerous! That's rich...:givebeer:

Building a walk in fridge/box- need help

A 16 X 24 is 384 square feet. I like the idea of the refer box truck, just buying the box off the cab & chassis. It's already made for your intended use.

    how to use a chainsaw?

Tim, if you are cutting in circles . . . check the slot in the bar. My saw shop tells me that [most of the time] cutting circles means it's time for a new bar. I had that trouble a lot in the past. Dull chains & sharpening with the wrong size files, wear out the bar with heat & friction. Been...

    right place right time

Should have bought all three, no matter what they were! Then Daddy would see what a great salesman the boy was cause they would be "out of the saw business"! LOL

    Wood Hauler Pics

Hey JimW, That looks like the big brother to my wood hauler! A 1970 PUG now called the Badlands model. The tires on this one are 26" and it's run off an 11 hp Honda. Mine needs 'ring' or diamond chains though. The log arch was built by a friend and has a 1200lb winch that I run...

    Hydro power.

I often think about the same thing but my deed gives me "third water rights" which means I can use the water as long as I don't dam it up. I thought that using a float system/paddle wheel would work best here since the town controls the small dam upstream.

Tune Saw = 14 stitches (graphic) OucH !!!

Really, what's up with that? Emergency room??? A couple of butterfly stitches (stick-ons) would have closed that! Most likely, since this happened in the back yard, alcohol was already involved!

Anyone got a good way to measure

The Infared Thermometers were just on sale at northern-tool, or The Sportsmans Guide for $7.99 or $9.99 Looks just like the ones I have for checking the head temps of my RC engines!

    cord measure of unstacked wood?

The original measure of a "CORD" of wood was only used with "CORD-WOOD" which is 4 feet long and consists of a pile 8 feet long and 4 feet deep! Any other measure or configuration was considered illegal in the early days of logging in America. So when selling firewood, a stacked pile of...
