    Bandsaw mills

I have heard mixed reviews on the WM setworks, even from their reps. I know of at least one case where the mill was returned and exchanged for one without setworks because of the frustration. I also know that many small production mills make money because they use setworks. Guess it depends...

    Spar Tree

The climbers name was Hap Johnson, it was done by the NFB and it is rumored to be available from ISA. It is so typically Canadian, taxpayers pay for the film and then must purchase it from the U.S. eh. :p

    Spar Tree

If it is the same film I am familiar with by that name it was done in the 70,s at Caycuse camp on Vancouver Island. (Climber tops out spar, sits on top with smoke, camera pans back to show height and sway) If you Google( National Film Board,Canada )you may find info on it, just a guess though...

    Happenings at Cary's place

How long did it take your milling contractor to mill the 5000 bdf ? I would think that you must be considering your own mill since you have your own wood and the means to move it. I can't tell if the mill in the pic is the LT 40 hyd or the super hyd model but there is a big difference in the...

    Happenings at Cary's place

What is the per board ft price range down there, say 2x12 full dimension or for 4x10 or 4x12 (in Doug fir)? Just trying to get a comparison to our frozen north prices.

    Do ants make trees unsafe?

Since the original question was "what has been your experience here" I thought I would add my one cent worth. On the coast I have seen carpenter ants enlarge their galleries significantly in Western Red Cedar and also in Douglas Fir to a lesser degree. This enlargment was into sound wood past...

    New competitor in town

Excellent feedback! It is a good thing that they do quality work for higher end customers and yes it will probably raise the bar in this area and yes there are a lot of million dollar properties around. And by the way they did buy out some bigger local companies to get in. Thanks for the info...

    New competitor in town

Bartlett Tree Service is moving to the the west coast of Canada, anyone out there know if they have a standard operating procedure when moving into a new area ? Perhaps there are some Bartlett employees out there who can shed light on the company. I am not sure even how much central control...

    Bandsaw mills

Do you cut for people on their site or do you have a semi permanent site and haul in? Also I would be interested to know how you market your service and or lumber.

    Bandsaw mills

Sorry to take forever to reply but I had to become more educated before even guessing what the problem might be with the knots. Just recently I had a timber framer tell me that it has been his experience that it is very difficult to cut a straight line in a species such as spruce or Western Red...

    Bandsaw mills

Newfie, We bought the LT 40 HDG (not to sure on the last 3 letters) it is fully hydraulic. Log lift, toe boards, ect. We are doing our own sharpening as we got the grinder and setter with it. That is a steep learning curve as well.

    How to find better clients?

Pacific, Any idea what the band millers will pay for the chunk truck wood?

    Bandsaw mills

Newfie, How are you doing with the mill? We bought a used Woodmizer about one month ago and are in the steep part of the learning curve. At this point with the little I have learned I think it might take quite a while to become proficient. Do you sharpen ypur own bands?

    Bandsaw mills

Newfie, what optional equipment did you get when you got the mill. What do you think are the essentials? Pacific, I seem to recall you are on the Gulf Islands, I'm on the big island north of Victoria. Does your friend cut mostly cedar, fir or other? How much per meter does a guy have to pay...

    Bandsaw mills

Anyone out there with a woodmizer mill ? I would like to know how many hours on your mill and what kind of reliability you have experienced. Even if you don't own one perhaps you know of someone elses experience with one regarding reliability over the long haul.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done?

Glad to see someone dredging up old posts, (besides Gypo). On the topic of root wads, the same fellow I mentioned earlier in this thread who was from England told me about three men killed by the same root ball. It seems that the 3 where in the process of bucking up a very large Beech or Oak...

    Man dies while trimming tree.12-18-03

One reason I can see for being reluctant to go higher is the tree was dead and he decided "crap that looks rotten, I'm not going any higher" on this assumption he decides the lead will shatter when it hits the ground and regrettably it does not.

    Man dies while trimming tree.12-18-03

Just a thought. What if the climber decided that he could just flop one or both leads so he climbs to the main fork (at 15') and thinking he can use the face cut angle plus maybe a dash of snap cut, he thinks he can jump the lead horizontal on impact. A little sloppy on the face, flaw in the...
