    Newbie skid steer/forestry head question...

have you priced having someone do the work for you? I am not sure what kind of money you want to dump into the project, or what you plan to do with the areas after clearing them, but you may spend less to have someone do the work then you would on the head alone. I had a couple of areas done...

    Vertical or Horizontal Splitting?

I used my 22T brave in the verticale a few times, but I was always chucking the wood out of the way. In the horizontal mode I can just pull the splitter forward 5 feet and let the splits drop on down. Seems like being down on my knees all day was not much fun especially on the cold days.

Thinking about harvesting some Black Locust ???

around here the firewood guys get a bit more for all locust wood. Not sure if your market is the same, but any locust I cut goes into posts for sale($9/8' post this fall) and the rest for firewood. not sure there is easier money than posts with this. I LOVE burning locust on those cold windy...

    vermont castings vigilant

A buddy that just moved out of state asked me to sell a wood stove for him. It is a 1974 Vermont Castings Vigilant that looks to be in good condition. any idea how much I should ask for it? I want to move it before the good selling time is gone. It looks like it is in good condition, but...

Chainsaw box for front of ATV

well mine is not protected, and it blocks the top head light, but most of my work around the farm is daylight work. I purchased about 8 of these at an auction for $40 and have strapped it on with zip ties. I pull it off in the winter when I use it to plow our short driveway.

Silver maple vs Hard maple - ID?

are sugar maple and rock maple two different species? Around here we have plenty of Silver Maple, but it is not much of a 'choice' wood. Seems to burn quick and go punky if it sticks around for long. The sugar maple is a much better burn, but you don't find much of it around here.

happy ending to the 5100 that lean seized

I do not think the shop in Winchester has any ties to 'the cutting edge' but I could be wrong. Either way they are making me happy! T-hall, the 200 is running good, got out and cleared all the trails the pines and cedars had closed off. Only have about 1/2 gal in it so far, but doing...

happy ending to the 5100 that lean seized

The situation with the 5100 that I had problems with about a month ago finally have been resolved. Dolmar has agreed to cover the saw under warranty(it was just about a year OUT of warranty)! I am pretty happy to say the least and going to learn how to tune on it when she returns home. After...

    5100 just burned up

Well the saw is down at the shop. Just dropped it off, and the tech should take a look at it next week. I will try to take a couple of pics after they decide what is going on with it. This saw was tuned when it left the shop new, and tuned again 6 months ago by the same guy. When I spoke...

    5100 just burned up

it was just tuned by the dealer about 6 months ago(Summer time of course) so I hope(?) they could get that correct. I am going down to talk with them later this week, and hope it will all work out, but not real hopeful. It was sitting about 3 months, but I emptied the gas, and put in fresh mix...

    5100 just burned up

Not a good day. Just went to do a little clean up after some rain, and after a few cuts the 5100 is not showing any compression. I pulled the muffler, and the piston has some pretty bad scoring. It looks like there is no ring(is that possible?). From what little I could see the cylinder wall...

    Pullin em out old style

if you dont mind me asking, what kind of rate were they charging for pulling the wood to the landing? What kind of terrain were they/you working in?

What's the best deal you ever got on a saw??

how about a 257 Husqvarna that I purchased new from Norther Hyd for $184 and change. I worked there after High school, and when items went on close out, we got about 40% off if I remember correctly. Darn good deal if I just used it for 10+ years and it died, but I sold it last summer for $180...

What is your sustained splitting rate?

whoops, that should have been cord every hour-1.5 hours!

What is your sustained splitting rate?

splitting time I typically average about 1 cord every hour or half hour. This is based on having everything set up and ready to go. I was working on a large red oak this summer, and all the large rounds(28") had already been at least quartered with the saw. I am using a 20T Brave/Iron and...

in need of a little saw but which one?

just got back from the dealers Wow, the combo redmax/Dolmar dealer does not seem to be doing to good with saws right now, he had exactly ONE Redmax in stock and no Dolmars at all! I am guessing he may not make it past this Winter. The Stihl dealer was better, but no ms200, but he did want to...

in need of a little saw but which one?

thanks for all the replies! The 5100 head weight is just under 11 lbs. From the reviews. I will have to check out the redmax. I was originally intending to go with the two saw dealers that I know in the area(husky and Stihll) but I will have to check the Redmax out, along with the 211. Is...
