To me anyway..it depends on what it is. For instance..I always keep at least 2 chainsaws ready for action immediately if necessary.
( have a few cans of True-Fuel for these and this purpose )
On the other hand..I know I'm NOT going to be running a weed-eater in the winter..so these get run dry...
OP...Pisgah NF is..NOT..at ~ 5000'..it's more like 2500'-3000'.
Hell..Mt. Mitchell is 6,300' and is at least twice as high in the air as you are.
You really need to learn to adjust a carb yourself anyways though..
As the weather in the mountains changes day to day and sometimes hour to hour...
Sounds like a 'vapor-lock' or your gas tank vent line is clogged.
Next time it happens, quickly un-screw the tank cap and listen for a 'sucking' of air into tank.
Then, try to re-start immediately...if it does...you've found your problem.

Well...you see that is the problem...that being the compression is just fine for say...a several year old saw.
That's why I asked who did the test..?? In other words...something(s) is just not adding up correctly here.
If we're talking about you helping a buddy out on a saw that you have no...
Dude..friend..If someone gave you a saw..and said it had been 'looked at'... that should tell you it's a POS.
Why are you posting about it before YOU pull the muffler and look inside...then you'll know.
If cylinder and the piston looks good...yeah, maybe a carb re-build and boot replace...but...
'Popcorn Sutton' used to say..."Jest about any hobby is CHEAP if'n you wuz to compare it to anything with tits and wheels on it."
Sure do miss that old bird...but I understand him exiting via 'Co'...no way he could have existed behind bars. Google him.
If you do that..you will see 2...
I might go $150 on the 'Rancher' and $100 on the 445 sooo....$250 for both...and only that if both run.
Remember..by buying both...you're taking more risk that one (or both) needs work = lower price bid.

From what you have described...I think your problem is oil related...I expect you are not getting enough oil to your bar.
Overheated bar = stretched hot chain. Clean bar grooves...bar oil supply hole...and make sure oil pump is pumping oil.

Did you go to VMInnovations..?? - They have the Husky 435 at 3 different prices.
New at $280 - 435-ARC-RB $197 - 435-BRC-RB $175
I would have spent the extra $100 or so and have at least got the $175 model.

Tanaka...if you don't know...is a REALLY big name brand in Japan..!!
They make all kinds of things both gas powered and electric. Quality is very good...I've read.
Very few dealers here in the U.S. - thus parts could be a problem - now back to your regular scheduled program.

I saw a guy cut up a thick mobile home trailer frame with a "sawzall''...it was slow going'''...but it worked.
I would think poly vinyl pipe would no problemo...like cutting 2" dried hardwood.

Brad...I understand what you're sayin'...but I really don't think the OP knew what the extra hole was about.
I don't think it was a taking it public thing at all...he likely just didn't know..Anyways it was settled amicably.

Cool beans..!! - I certainly would have been dissatisfied with that crappy looking muffler...
A monkey from the circus could have done better..IMO..
Anyways...just good that you made it right...speaks well of your character..!!

I would not hesitate to request a replacement muffler...or some $$ back
That muffler mod has got to be the worst I have ever seen - Get some $$ back and buy a dual-port muffler..!!
