    Shindaiwa 350 questions?

Judging from the chain and the inside of the clutch cover, I believe it was used once to cut a trench through a driveway. Got new impulse and pickup tubes, carb kit, and filters. Ran a tank of 32:1 Lawnboy mix then re-tuned it to 50:1 Ultra. Starts first pull when cold and will start with a...

    Shindaiwa 350 questions?

I found this BURIED in the back of my FIL's shed and he's been deceased for 20 years. I cleaned the carb and it fired right up but needs a carb kit to get it running right. Anybody know the approximate manufacture year on this saw? It seems very torquey, will it pull a sharp 16" for what...

    Axe Handle Protectors

Radiator hose, there's a stellar idea If I was scared of snakes I wouldn't live next to a swampy bayou, regardless, firewooding has always been a winter sport for me.

    Axe Handle Protectors

The sighting of the first copperhead of the season has put an end to my timber sport season. So I cleaned up my heavy hitters, sharpened, and re-hung a couple of them, and after a few more coats of linseed oil I'll store them away for the summer. I do a lot of splitting with the double-bit axe...

    Mild Winter wood usage

In my 18 years of wood heat in the same house this is the first season I've used less than a cord. Three cords is the norm and I was excited last year that I only used a little over two cords. I guess I'm through for the year so I'll have to haul the rick in my garage back out to the shed...

    Oak ID

Could be Sawtooth but I'm thinking Cherrybark, stuff is VERY heavy and takes FOREVER to season, I'm talking 4 plus years.

    Barber chair!

That triangle version of the Coos is sweet, beats boring in any day. I use it on larger trees even if they aren't leaners mainly because it helps me line up the final back cut perfectly.

    Barber chair!

I thought it was gonna chair a 2nd time, gufus standing right behind it trying to push it over after almost getting slapped a minute before. I'll give him points for wearing a helmet and being fleet footed.

    Chimney fire

I've figured out if you use the Rutland Creosote Remover on a crazy hot bed of coals right before you shut the stove down and cool it off to brush out the pipe the whole process is easier and more effective. It doesn't "remove" anything but it turns creosote from black tar to gray fluff much...

Guys, don't get complacent out there!!!

I'm very skull sensitive. I get crazy looks but I won't walk on a golf course without a hard hat. I won't walk through the woods on a windy day without one. I'll probaby wear one to bed after watching that video.

OAK Routed to adjacent room for draft?

I've always ran the fan in my central heat unit to distribute the heat around during the evenings when everyone is scattered around the house. This year I mounted a box fan over the central air intake and run it on low speed 24/7. Does a remarkable job of easing air through all the vents and...

Fire Extinguishers. Have you ever needed one?

I have half a dozen FEs scattered around but the main one is mounted right at eye level beside the door into the garage, everybody in the family knows exactly where it is, they see it everyday, I gave pop quizzes on where it was. I trained them on how to pull the pin, squeeze the handle. Lo...

Tried out my new ms290, I have some questions

I cut and split an oak this morning, came in took a shower, ate lunch, took a nap, got up and stacked my wood, played with the dogs, came in and started watching ND whip Pitt in basketball tonight. Wife came home and wondered why I had the TV blasting. Whoops, still had my foam earplugs...

How much do you burn in 24hrs

My US Stove insert consistently burns exactly 24' sq per week of 20" oak split 6-8" and keeps a leaky 2000' foot house 40-50 degrees above outside temp depending on the wind.

Two Years Later and Still Hissing.

Red oak gives me fits too. On humid days it just smolders no matter how seasoned it is unless I preheat it by the stove for half a day. Hickory is almost as bad, never know from one log to the next whether its going to sit there and smoke or go turbo. 100% white oak/post oak for me, hate a...

    Small chimney fire tonight

I've had several and they've always occurred when I opened the door on a really hot fire. I immediately shut the door and damper and they always go out within a few seconds. Only one chimney fire that I would classify as dangerous and that was due to my rope gasket being worn to where I...

Cleaning the flue cap screen from the bottom

I made a rig from some weedeater line clamped between some large fender washers. Attach it to my rods and chuck the bottom into a drill and give it a couple of good spins. I was really surprised at how well it works. Since this pic I've changed from .095 line to .155 which works even better.

Video of me cutting down a massive pine

I cut a beetle-killed yeller pine today almost that big. Hard hat, football shoulder pads, and tenner shoes for quick exit. I told the wife to watch out the window in case I got whacked. That triggered her "calamity" instinct and she grabbed the camera.
