How do you think the wood heat "newbies" did this past season?

Well I watched my neighbor run his new outdoor boiler all winter to the tune of 30 cords. All but 2 of which he had to buy. I think he spent more on wood than he would have on oil heat. But hey I got to listen to a 20 year old poulan every weekend all day long

    Birch firewood

Here in Alaska birch is our only hardwood choice. I burn about 5 cords of it a year. The main problem is the bark. There is a reason they build canoes out of it. So you have a couple of options at two foot lengths. 1) split it. Anything over say 8 inchs and keep it off the ground and...

    Thoughts on dropping this tree?

ok here's my question. Never having the opportunity to fall a big tree like that. I noticed from the pics that on the face cut the 45 was bottom cut and the top cut was horizontal. I've always done it the other way. Am I doing it wrong?

    i have a bad idea

MY thought is with the rc plane starter. As a kid my friend flew them. He had a handheld starter motor that had a rubber tip that fit over a rubber cone on the planes motor. JUst place the cone and tip togther and hit the starter. It was friction fit so you didn't have to worry about getting...

    Pinch Crimp Rings???

THe best fitting for pex is the rehau ever lock. It uses a special tool that is very expensive but most plumbing supply houses wil let you borrow the tool. The fitting consists of a sleeve and a barbed fitting. There are actually two tools, 1 is an expander and one is like a chain clmap that...

    Cutting wood =

What a great thread. I just got in from filling my wood rack in my garage. I keep a face cord in the garage and the rest outside. Winter has set in in Alaska. We got about 7 inches of snow today and it's supposed to get below zero tonight. I set here next to my stove, it's 87 in my house and...

Burner law is passed by council IN MILLERSBURG PA.

Unfortunately I can tell excately why a lwa like this is passed. As I type this I can see two outdoor boilers from my window. I live in an urban area! One is less than 30 feet from my house with a six foot stack. And they are both burning green wood. My house now smells like a$$. I love to...

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

Thanks for the info. So I'm looking at 60,000 lbs for a connex full of dry oak I wonder if that is too much for a connex. Anybody know the weight limits of a connex?

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

I didn't mean to burst your bubble. We do have alot of beautiful places just crappy wood. I wonder what the cpacity of a connex is? I'm guessing a cord of wood weighs about 2500 lbs or so? Anybody know? Seasoned would be much less that's for sure

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

well you'd need a pellet stove for pellets. And I love my Hearthstone stove. I'd just to be able to burn good hardwoods in it.

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

Birch is the only hardwood available here. The other option is spruce. And then there is Aspen or cottonwood. Both of those are considered trash woods. Aspen is ok but almost impossible to keep dry. As for the price of wood it has skyrocketed with the price of oil. Winter here lasts from...

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

Well this is just a theory at this point. I would have to find some one willing to sell 20 cords and load it into a connex. I'm pretty sure I could sell it all in a weekend. Wood here has gone crazy. Hell even if I could just break even and keep a couple of cords for myself I'd be happy

Crazy Idea or what? You decide

Ok here's my idea. I live in Interior Alaska. the only hardwood we have is paper birch. Not the best. Does ok but it's the only thing. I've been thinking of buying a 40 connex load of oak or maple and having it shipped here. I've figured I can fit 20 cords in the trailer. BIrch here is...

    All Around Best Firewood

Well here in Alaska we on;y have two real choices. Birch or spruce. I like to start with spruce burns hot and fast. Then switch to birch. Birch is tough casue it really has to be split for a good year to dry out. And it will rot quickly if not split. BUt I'd kill for a connex full of oak...
