White Oak takes forever to dry.

A little surprised by the long dry times. I get a combo of Oak and Mesquite. Once cut, I split and stack in a shed. I guess 40 plus days of 100 in the summer at <20% humidity might have something to do with it. I generally allow a year to cure, never had a problem.

    Any Gen-X’ers heating with wood?

1965 model. Burned wood as a kid, but just for ambiance mostly. 16 years ago we moved to the country and bought a stove, Country Flame. Never intended to "heat" the house, but rather supplement. Does a very good job. Too old to get up at 2 and reload though. We are all electric heat, so this...

    Wood splitter woes

There's 4 things actually, oil, which there is plenty of. Thanks for the link farmer steve, that's cheaper than northern. Whatever I end up doing I will change fluid and filter, may consider adding gauge too, they are less than $20.

    Wood splitter woes

This may not be an appropriate section for this post, but there's simply more people here. I've got a 1993 Northern 5 hp log splitter, very basic. Has worked flawlessly for years. Fired it up this fall for the first time and the ram seemed slower than normal. After a couple of back and forth...

    Electric Chainsaw

Wow, thanks folks, great response. I found out that he generally trims the tree with a pruning saw and then uses the chainsaw to cut it up. BTY, it is for my B-I-L, who is my nephews Dad.

    Electric Chainsaw

Cordless....awesome, never thought about that. He found a cordless Ryobi at HD, but I told him to keep looking, it's obvoisly too late to mail order

    Electric Chainsaw

My nephew wants to buy his Dad an new saw. He had some gas McCullough that died from lack of use. He has no mechanical skills. All he needs to do is trim small stuff, typically 4" dia max. He needs a pruning saw. I'm thinking electric is in order. I have no idea. Thoughts?

    Season's first fire last nite

Heat, you got to be kiddin'! The lowest high for this month so far is 98°, over a hundred more often than not. That said, I did fire up the smoker for some ribs last weekend...if that counts. Not complaining though, I'd rather have 100° than 30°.

Cutting fun on Saturday w/ daughter

Nice work! I have 2 girls they are 8 and 10. The 10 y/o is happy being a couch potato, the 8 y/o is constantly under my feet. Last w/e I had about a dozen rounds to split and fired up the splitter, she came a runnin' and had to help. Not crazy about it because it is dangerous, but we both...

    You probably didn't notice

I had my cuff and labrum done in Dec. It was the best thing I ever did. Had been bothering me for years, and was beginning to inhibit firewood gathering:mad: I agree about the PT(physical torture) folks. I think that helped so much I started working out both shoulders. Outlander, I'll bet...

    Snapped crankshaft

A buddy who does yard work on the side was using his '08 Wild Thing on some Pecan. He said the chain chattered and then it stopped. Motor ran chain did not. It snapped the crank off right at the clutch. I know it isn't the greatest saw, but he really can't afford to buy a new saw. I offered to...

Bit OT and early advise needed on lawn tractor purchase.

I bought a new craftsman lawn tractor for the '09 mowing season. I got it for $1700 and it has 54" deck, 24 HP V-twin Briggs with a hydro tranny(a TT46). I mow 3 acres nearly every week during the growing season and I can mow and trim in under 3 hours. I wont use it for anything else except...
